Horses that are new to you... if you don't know their worming history do you go right to a Power Pac or a normal single dose wormer? I have used Power Pacs on a new horse with good results but a part of me wonders if I'm wasting my money after hearing stories about them not working...

Power packing is a very good marketing tool to sell an outdated product for the 3 types of round worms ... Panacur and Safeguard are the same .. pkg is different ... it is one of the first horse wormers and most worms are immune to it so it takes a massive dose to do anything ...

The marketing scheme is to sell you 10x a single dose hoping it will knock the worms out so the horse can expel them in his poop ... it will not kill the worms or destroy the eggs. By doing this it makes a huge profit for the mfgr of the wormer ..

Here is a scientific explanation: The pharmacologic basis of the treatment for helminths generally involves interference with the integrity of parasite cells, neuromuscular coordination, or protective mechanisms against host immunity, which lead to starvation, paralysis, and expulsion or digestion of the parasite.

Here is my worming routine that I have found is very successful and horses stay fat and shiny with the least amount of expense for my yearly worming program.

I use Exodus at 6 months .. my weaning time for foals ... or if I buy a new horse that has a "hay belly" or bad hair that shows they have worms along with dark brown to black colored poop caused by worm excrement . This gets rid of the round worms and sets foals and horses up for doses of ivermectin within the next 30 days...

The other off the standard worming time schedule is for my broodmares .. I worm them with ivermectin 7-10 days BEFORE I think they are going to foal. The reason being ... foal will eat some of his Mom's poop within 24 hours to get his good gut bacteria started so it can digest whole grains and grasses .. this way they do not get a tummy full of worm eggs from Mama ...

I use Holidays as a way to mentally track my worming schedules ... all horses are wormed on these days regardless if a new horse or foal got wormed 2-4 weeks ago to put them all on the same page ...

Take note .. Quest is good for 90 days and ivermectin for 60 days and these holidays track these time frames very well ...

NEW YEARS WEEK .. QUEST $10
This also kills tapeworms and winter feeding a horse will eat more poop than when grazing on summer pasture ..
90 days

The 5 next holidays fall in my 60 day ivermectin program
EASTER WEEK ...
MEMORIAL DAY..
JULY 4TH WEEK ..
LABOR DAY ...
HALOWEEN ..
5 wormings x $3 ='s $15

this completes a full year of worming scheduling ...
total cost for one horse $25 for the year ..
so start again with NEW YEARS AND QUEST ...

You will like the condition your horses stay in with a good simple feeding
program ... such as whole oats, alfalfa and a handful of ADM GROSTRONG MINERALS EVERY OTHER DAY as their only supplement ..

If you want more shine or to darken a palomino over the winter for a spring time shedding ... add a double handful of cracked corn to the whole oats and alfalfa ..

GOOD LUCK ... THIS KISS WORMING PROGRAM WORKS FOR ME ..

We had a mare in October we purchased we later found out she had 4-5th stage strongyles. She was expelling adult worms. We power packed her and After a week we hadn't seen any in her feces. Fecal tested 6 weeks later came back clean. I'm in the south so we were still cutting grass in December! Make sure you quarantine her and spread the feces/cut her pasture frequently. In December we dewormer with quest plus. (For tapes) she had a full work up in early February and fecal check came back clean again. No worms no eggs. It does work. Even my gelding who's had multiple fecal checks was clean who was pastured with her before we knew. My friend also bought a horse recently that was just not great looking. Even if a fecal shows nothing. They still could be carrying worms it just that those worms are not in the transmitting stage. She Power packed him and his dull coat had gone away he now shines!! and as picked up roughly 150#'s only difference was power packing. Same feed same pasture!
Also I'm not one to deworm with the same type of wormer all year. I get fecal samples and know what worms are high at what times of the year for each horse as some horses are higher egg shredders than others. . Only way to know what you need to worm for!

No way would I do that to a horse where I don't know their history. Do a simple dose of Ivermectin once or twice and timed apart.  You hit them too hard with a PP they can colic or founder from the toxins released in the worm die-off.

I wouldn't take the chance of blistering a horses mouth with something that was designed to be injected into cattle ..

You can buy store name generic ivermectin a lot of places for less than $3
a tube ... you can't be that broke not to buy a proper wormer for your horse(s)..
lol

I knew someone several years ago that wormed with a cattle wormer and killed the horse. Horses are not the same as cattle.

I am not broke. LOL   But mine weigh more than 1,200 # so the store wormers don't have enough in them. I have weighed mine on a scale and 2 of my 4 year olds weigh 1,360 # and one of my 10 year olds weigh 1,430 #.  So trying to get a second partial dose into their mouth can be a little trying. Just thought that it might be easier to use a syringe and do it in one shot with the right dosage.
