Veteran Posts: 291	When the nails come unfolded and the shoes shifts a little backwards can that cause the hoof to be damaged? Or just temporarily sore. He gets shod Saturday

Elite Veteran Posts: 788	It shouldnt cause them to get sore. . . Unless its been waaayyy too long. But if it has only been 8 weeks then no. If he is sore footed I would say something else is going on. Maybe stepped on something?

Expert Posts: 5293	Are you talking about the clinches coming loose due to the shoe being on that long??? IN my experience YES. But only on ONE horse. He is off the track and has/had thin walls and sole. WHen his shoes come lose or anything it causes quite a bit of pain for him. I always carry rickens hoof paint. Its a very strong foot pain deadner. It will get me by.

Veteran Posts: 291	No this set of shoes has only been on 5 weeks. But we get them redone every 5 weeks due to him having thin soles. It's been really really wet here until this past week it's dried tremendously. He was not limping at all until this past week. And no the nails haven't broke off just came up instead of being folded downward. Almost like the shoe is coming loose Edited by fgf 2016-06-15 10:53 AM

Elite Veteran Posts: 788	That sounds more like he might have hung it on something and almost pulled it off. The nails should not be lose after 5 weeks unless you need a new horse shoer. I have a horse that loves to paw. . at anything and he has loosened his shoes up before. That could potentially cause problems.

ANd yep mine gets sore just like yours. lol My farrier however makes me leave mine on 8 weeks due to having thin soles.

Veteran Posts: 291	My veterinarian has done x-rays which show a calcium buildup in both front feet. On one his heel is very low to the ground so we can't let the hoof grow out too much or it will cause other issues. I'll have to try the rickens hoof paint. I'm tired of this off/on lameness but have been told there is not much I can do

Member Posts: 49 Location: Southerner	I don't know where you girls live but YES there are things you can do for thin sole's. Sole pressure is why when it went from wet to dry And the shoe move just slightly that your horse got sore. Lows heels and thin sole's are holding hands with improper balance of the hoof BEFORE the showed is applied. Pretty simple stuff y'all. Great luck
