| We lost our foal at 30 days and I have put the mare out there if anyone had a need for a nurse mare, this late in the season I am pretty sure there won't be a need.
Any advice on helping her to dry up- vet said to cut her rations. Really concerned with getting mastitis and of course having another vet bill. I can't afford that at the moment.
I have officially decided that 2016 ends for me on June 30th, because I need to get this one over with. |

Location: Arkansas | No suggestions but so sorry about your baby. You've had a rough year, so I don't blame you for choosing a fiscal year end. . . . How is your gelding doing? I have been away from BHW for awhile but I've thought about you and several others that were having issues with their four legged kids. |

My gelding has sound days and off days- I think this is due to bruising and abscesses inside the foot. Once his foot grows out I anticipate a sound horse. He had about 30 of being really sound and his last trim showed where he had some abscessing on the whole inside quarter.
We are at the it will take time stage.
Really feeling like I should get rid of them so my black cloud won't bother them anymore. |

 Brains Behind the Operation...

Location: Arizona | So sorry to hear about the loss of your baby. It's tough losing them at any age, but foals are especially heartbreaking. You don't necessarily need to feed the mare a smaller ration, just try not to feed anything rich for a couple weeks. No grain or alfalfa or rich green grass; just plenty of grass hay. Their bag will get full & uncomfortable for a couple days, and it's really tempting to milk them out to help ease their discomfort... But resist the temptation. DO NOT milk them out. That will only promote further milk production. You can slather some bag balm on the udder, but that's it. They will usually start drying up in a week or two. |

| Thanks for the advice- she seems comfortable and her udder doesn't feel overly hard or hot.
She hasn't hollered for him since she got off the trailer Wednesday evening. Mixed blessing there since I don't want her to upset, but I am quite sad he is gone.
Time to give her a bath and scrub her up. Give her the works so to speak today. |

Praying for you, your mare, and your gelding. And looking forward to an update on him in a few months that he's doing great! (I'm sure your mare appreciated the spa treatment today---that always seems to help me feel better as much as it does them.) |

Location: The Great Northwest | The off and on lameness would concern me. I would want to know what is going on before it becomes something chronic possibly and costing $$$ or the life of the horse. If you can find a vet who can do some testing. |
