I have a very nice gelding that came from the Judd Little Ranch. I bought him from a trainer I know who while he had him put his own brand on him as well. To me all this is clutter and it makes it more difficult to sell a horse. I'd like to know what everyone else's opinion is.

If you bought the horse, I guess it wasn't very hard to sell.

I think it is kind of not cool. We did it once and have always regretted it. She was branded on her right shoulder from the breeder and we kept her for several yrs, started her under saddle etc and put ours on her left hip. We never did it again. I kind of personally think the BREEDER should be the one branding...

Chelsea Kroes has a nice gelding she runs by her stud.  I believe he was a buy-back and the other person had branded him on his left shoulder.  Plus he has Chelsea's brand on his left hip.  I always notice that he has two brands, but I think he sports them well.

I'd probably notice two brands, but it would never stop me from looking. It's kinda like tattoo's for horses

Kmcsunshine when said I was taking him(on a Monday) and had my deposit on him he was not yet branded with the trainers brand. By Sunday when i could pick him up he was branded. Not something that in my case was going to change my mind, but I will say i really don't like it. I just bought a yearling who is branded, but I guess I 'd just prefer it be only one brand.

Well...we just bought a young one with 3 brands. I don't like the looks of it and it did throw up a red flag for us to look into his history. He has breeder's brand on left hip. He was sold to 2nd owner as a yearling. Their brand is on left shoulder. These people apparently had some family drama and sold him to a trainer. Trainer branded him again on his left hip.  Individually, I understand why they all did it. For a trainer, a brand can serve as advertising. They want to brand the good ones. Like I said, its ugly, but it didn't stop us from buying him.

My mare has 3 brands. An "05" on her left shoulder and a "1" on each buttcheck up near her tail base. Luckily two of hers are somewhat hidden by her tail but if she had 3 that were clearly showing(like on hip or shoulder.. or on their face like some have started doing) I don't think I would be as ok with it. It just seems excessive. Now my mares are not from a trainer or ranch from what I have gathered over the years but more so as a way to identify foals at the ranch in TX where she was born. Two well respected brands on a horse would be ok but 3 is defiantly excessive in my mind. I just wish people would wait to brand a horse with their brand till they have actually accomplished something with that particular horse rather than just because they put a few weeks on a horse and re-sell. I saw that a lot in the team penning world.

Yeah, me too. I feel like that should've been disclosed before the sale was made.

IMO it isnt the most aesthetically pleasing... but I own a horse with 4 brands.
Poor thing as two on his left hip, one on his right hip and one on his shoulder.

At least he is identifiable.

I wonder why they didnt already have their brand on him when you went to go try him out?

I've seen a lot of horses that people will have their cattle brand on the hip and a horse brand on the shoulder. I have 2 with 2 brands and they look good, but they're pretty simple and not flamboyant like some of the ones you see...
One guy that I used to rope with had an old grey mare that had 10 hot iron brands on her. She was about 30 years old and had some stories to tell. They don't make them like that anymore!

I put my brand on my good ones, even if someone has already branded them. If I like the horse, he's getting branded. There's a really nice one running and winning jackpots and rodeos in north Texas with MY brand on his thigh. Doesn't hurt my feelings one bit!
