I am curious, anyone on here that rodeos and uses Lasix?  It is looking like I may have to go that route with my gelding.  How do you manage multiple runs in a weekend/day?  When I worked at the racetrack we used Lasix all the time, but then the horses were given several days off and didn't race again for 2-3 weeks.  My vet is doing her research, but I was just looking for others experiences.  Also, anything that can be done to minimize the side effects (dehydration, electrolyte imbalances, etc.)

Thank you!

I am dealing with the same thing. I am currently just playing with dosage and timing, but of course it's at the busiest time. My vet said it was okay to do multiple days in a row, but my rodeos are spread out where I have a break (a day or two) here and there. But this week, for example, we will run Tuesday, Wednesday off, then Thursday-Sunday. He said it was fine. I give electrolyte paste after she runs. Luckily, she's an easy keeper but I did notice after a couple runs last week and lots of hauling she was trimming up. Another girl I run with, I spoke with her about exactly this and her vet had said the same thing, that it's okay. Just not EVERY day type thing, but multiple days are fine (just don't do twice in the same day). I also give a racing formula supplement high in vitamin k, digestive aid that has lots of probiotics in it, use flair strips, have Equiresp treatments lined up, etc.

My daughter has with no problems.  We give Lasix with B12 for the run.  We feed DAC Race formula every day, and give Animal Element In The Zone after then run.  She drinks excellent after that.

She has won a PRCA Pro Rodeo and made multipal runs in a week/weekend like our State NBHA show and the World show and runs in the 1D.

This last State show in FL, the vet was doing scoping for $25 and for that price, I wanted to see how she was doing.  She was scoped 30 minutes after her last run and the 3rd in 4 days as well as the 5th in 8 days.  Her lungs were beautiful.  One of the best looking lungs she saw all week.  Mare is 15 years old and a known bleeder.  The vet told me to keep using the proticals I was using because it was working well.
We have never done it like every single weekend for months on end but I would try to have a back up horse if that were required and or make sure she had a month or two off periodically.
Also, she has been on Lasix, DAC and Animal Element for 7 years now and not bled through.  She did bleed through just lasix a few times prior to the current set of medications.

We had a mare in the past, we sometimes had to give it twice in a day and never had a problem.  Our NBHA shows did not allow roll overs in the youth.  Our shows were often well over 100 riders.  If the second ride was more than 6 hours out, we gave half the dose again.  With the B12 and electrolite paste.  This mare won the NBHA Open 2D at the World show, so she was very fast.  I can't imagine that happening very often but 10 years ago it was a common issue.  If you made the finals at places like Calgary and ran on it, you would have to.  That was per vet also.

I also carry IV fluids (or did when we hauled a lot) so if at any time, If necessary, I could administer extra fluids.  I never had to, and have not yet but I do know other people that do the same thing.

People live on lasix every day for many years.  Its often the same medication.

I have, I will use the least amt of lasix that I can but I won't compromise my horse if I have to bump the dose I will. You have to replenish lost electrolytes and know how to replace fluids if you need to.  With your track background you probably already know that. Send in blood and learn from those serial reports on what and when to give a replacement. B-Vitamins to keep the pep in the step and baking soda for the acidosis that can occur. But check that with labs! Thankfully the B-Vitamins are eliminated easily and no toxicity should result. Keep your horse on a good balance electrolyte daily during hauling season. Use a nebulizer and know what meds are best per your horses condition with the use of the nebulizer. If you have to run on flixotide don't run out. It's getting very hard to get now a days so order it 45-60 days before your going to need it. When you horse shows signs of needing a break by all means go on break.
If you haven't done a BAL post a run then I would recommend getting one done; that way your using the appropriate medications to help you horse run his heart out for you.
Like the other poster said 1/2 dose of your initial dose of lasix if you have another run later in the day.
Water on the trailer for long hauls or pull over and let them water every two-three hours.

I had a mare I rodeoed on that required Lasix---BAD bleeder.

I gave her the dose 4 hours out and pulled water and then gave it back to her right after. Did the same thing for the runs that evening. Just kept my timing the same. I always made sure to watch that she didn't get dehydrated on those multiple run weekends.
