Location: Sunny So Cal | I have not been pregnant but friend has and she stopped after the first trimester because she said the baby won't be able to be protected in the pelvis because it is now too big. I haven't looked this up for accuracy |

Location: Oklahoma | The day I found out I was pregnant. It's not worth the risk of my baby's life. I'm now 32 weeks. My horse will still be there after the baby is born. I am not going to risk my baby's life by riding while pregnant. |

Location: Good ole SE Mo | I quit at about 4 months on competing. My belly got a little too big and I just felt like I wasn't doing my horses any justice anyway. One is a 5 year and the other is older but not finished so they need me riding decent instead of flopping around. I caught myself trying to hold myself right in the middle of my saddle with my arm/saddle horn on my last run. I decided it wasn't worth it and my husband had been griping the whole time anyways. My boys will be ready to come back next Jan/Feb after I have my girl :) Before I just knew I was gonna compete until August or so but just didn't happen and since it's been so stinking hot and humid here me and the boys are totally fine with not doing anything this summer lol |

| I quit after 6 weeks (basically right when we found out) it's not worth the risk. We just had our little guy last week and if I got pregnant again I wouldn't ride either. Your horse will be there when you get done. I can not wait to ride again :) |

| I competed until I was too fat to get on and off my horse and was 1 1/2 second slower than we normally are. |

| 21 weeks. I never got uncomfortable or lost my balance. Just felt like a good time to quit. |

Location: Northwest Florida | I am 36 weeks and still ride, but that last time I competed was around 28 weeks. I've managed to stay pretty compact though and haven't gained much weight so that makes it easier. I imagine the more you gain the more it affects your balance.
Up until 14 weeks, my doctor told me that in order for the baby to be harmed your pelvis would literally have to be crushed, because the baby is so well protected during that time.
Sometime around 20 weeks I was riding a mare that almost bucked me off after rounding the third barrel (she was a little unpredictable at times) so I didn't get on her again. But I still ride my old faithful geldings without worries. Of course anything can happen, but it's up to you what you feel comfortable with. |

Location: Missouri | The day I found out. I knew I wouldn't ride like I could because I'd safety up and it just wasn't worth it to me to risk it. I have a trustworthy older horse but I was more worried about a fall due to ground or something.
I'm 33 weeks and yes I'm ready to ride again but ts gone quickly! |

Location: Louisiana | I have a friend who technically competed late in her pregnancy. She was over 30 weeks I know, probably closer to 35-36.
She had to compete at a finals event to win her awards, so she walked all of her patterns on her most trustworthy mount.
My sister in law rode til about 3-4 months. She had a horse buck with her one day on a quiet trail ride and that was it.
I haven't been pregnant, but I feel like I would ride as long as I was comfortable. I certainly wouldn't force myself just for the sake of riding. But if the doctor said it was ok, and I felt like it, I would.
You're going to get so many answers, you have to do what you think is best. |

Just because someone was willing to take a chance and they got away with it doesn't mean there's no risk. All it means is they were ill advised or just foolish.
The fact of the matter is unless you can guarantee you won't fall off or spear your belly on the horn, it's a bad idea. Blunt trauma poses a serious risk both to the mother and the fetus. It can lead to premature rupture of membranes, placental abruption, and even rupture of the uterus. I've seen such cases. One was from a fall while roller- blading, another from falling off a bike, and another while tubing behind a boat.
Chances are you will get away with it, but that just means you were stupid and lucky. |

| I've never been pregnant, but my twin sister just had my nephew and it got me thinking about this subject for in the future. I don't think I will ride when I'm pregnant. I'll make my SO ride or lunge the horse I have, or maybe a friend but it really isn't worth the risk. And I don't think I would have fun because I would be worried the whole time! Obviously it's not as fun and doesn't pertain to the question, but maybe have someone you know and trust ride the horse while you're pregnant? I know it doesn't necessarily keep you in riding shape, but at least your horse will be ready when you are! Maybe doing some pregnancy workouts, core exercises, walking, etc would help someone to stay in somewhat decent riding shape for their horse. Congratulations to those that are pregnant on here by the way |

TUBING BEHIND A BOAT?? SERIOUSLY?? WOW!! I would think that would be way way way more dangerous to do while pregnant. People really are stupid. |

Any kind of activity that causes motion can be dangerous while pregnant, its really quite amazing what are bodies can do.
I personally thought before I was pregnant that I would ride until I was uncomfortable when we did decide to have children, Im 35 wks and though I don't believe ive put on too much weight (20lbs), I think that weight has changed my balance, and too me its not worth it, too each their own. And even if you consider yourself a healthy, athletic, in shape person, no one knows how you body is going to handle carrying a baby, especially the first time around.
I was asked, then told nicely by my OB no riding, and she asked me not to ride a 4 wheeler either which I have several times just take more caution than before.
Yes, I realize doctors are being on the safe side and there's a good chance you'll go through you entire pregnancy with no issues, but they tell you this for a reason. This is my first but I've felt like its gone so fast, 4 wks left. And yes I miss riding, but it doesn't hurt a horse to have some time off too. Ive got 7 out in the pen, 3 of which need to be started and haven't decided how im going to accomplish this yet, but will see how things go.
Good luck!! |

Location: Weatherford, Texas | 24 weeks and that was for prorodeos so it wasn't like I was on a dink. And he is only 5 and just getting started running (but doing great.....love that horse so much!).
I was fine and barely showing but the last weekend of rodeos (3 that weekend) I did feel a little behind him and like I couldn't quite be where I wanted or thought I should. I am still riding, but just walk, trot, and slow lope. And not on mine just because he can get a little fresh sometimes---only on the older mature and safer horses. I do a WHOLE lot of turning calves out of the chute for my hubby now (but I think that is my future since we are having a boy!)
I am 31 weeks and ready to be back going. That great young horse standing in the pen is ready too! LOL |
