Just curious to see what people prefer to use to help encourage their horses to give their all.

Body language, however, with my colt I recently started just flipping the over and under across her back, behind my saddle, as we go into the alley. Just so that she is aware we are really going to compete and not dink around out there lol

I think it all gets easier once you breeze them for the first time, then they know they can do it!

I use body language for all of them!  But the laid up one I always used a quirt.  My main mare just bumper spurs but that's more for keeping her brain in the turns.  My prospect I use an english crop.  Depends on the horse to me.  If they don't need any extra encouragement I don't use anything other than body language.

I used a quirt to teach my mare to fire out of her turns but other then that I refuse to hit my horse. They are already working their hearts out for me.

I really think it does depend on the horse, but Im mostly just a body language person. I usually start younger ones by using an over an under if I need it, but once they figure out what they are supposed to do, I find it kind of pointless to reiterate the same "go faster" by smacking them over and over when they are already trying to go as fast as they can.
