Last Decemeber I started a thread about my 21 year old gelding (Dan) who had been displaying some strange symptoms. He was very sick for close to two months but finally, after exhausting every possible diagnosis, the symptoms/swelling subsided. We still dont know what caused all of it. Here is the thread link: http://forums.barrelhorseworld.com/forum/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=468453&start=1

We gave him time off to recover. He lost some weight through the whole ordeal and it took him a few months to bounce back. I started back riding him in June and he went back to running barrels in August.  So far it's like he never missed a beat and he has won me a check at almost every barrel race we have entered. A couple weekends back I entered him in our NBHA state show and he made it back to the finals. So needless to say, he is doing pretty well. Just thought you guys might would want an update on the old guy. Hoping this winter is much less stressful than the last.

Thank you guys! He has such a special place in my heart. Chandler's mom, I pray my Dan is around as long as yours has been. I would love for my future kid(s) to be able to learn to ride on his back.

Thank youΒ guys!Β He has such a special place in my heart. Chandler's mom, I pray my Dan is around as long as yours has been. I would love for myΒ future kid(s) toΒ be able to learn to ride on his back.Β

Mine is a red dun and he was the one that gave me my confidence and courage to ride after my car wreck. He's one of a kind and I simply dont know what I'll do when he tells me it's time to let him go. But for now he's sassy and full of **** and vinegar!!! Bucks and kicks like he's 5. He's been retired for years but I'd put a kid on him in a heartbeat and know he'd protect that child with every bone in his body. The good ole guys (and girls) are priceless. You have a gorgeous Dan and I hope he's going for many more years for you. And the future kids!!

It makes my heart so happy to hear things like this! I too have been battling a mystery illness with my good gelding--and we still don't have any answers, but I've finally gotten him maintaining his weight and muscle tone and seeminly feeling good. I entered my guy in our state NBHA finals at the beginning of October and was so proud of him when he ran 10th and 14th out of 230, then 5th out of 103 in the finals.

I didn't see your original post back in December, but looking at it now, it sure looks like it was pigeon fever to me. He probably just finally got over it. Glad he's well and doing good for you again. He sure is a pretty thing.
