 Midget Lover
Location: Kentucky | I have a 19 year that is proven 1D in large shows, and still 2D in bigger shows. She's a beast, very gritty, loves her job. Can't wait to get into the pen. However, lately I've been dealing with some lameness issues. She was diagnosed with kissing spine a year ago, and she's injected once every six months. She hurt for a long time before the diagnosis and now is a pain to get in the trailer. She's incredibly stoic. Once at a show she lights up, ready to work and has the prettiest runs. I'm thinking of retiring and trying to get a baby out of her. She is not a maiden, but it's been many years since her last babe. She's had two, one of which is a successful mounted shooting horse. I can't seem to locate the other one.
How do you know when it's time to retire to broodmare status? She's a lifer here, so she doesn't need to keep running for her to stay with me. |

Location: Texas | I would do it... at that age, it can be harder to get her bred anyway, so if you have your heart set on getting a baby I would try sooner than later. We did that with our JOH mare. Retired her at 19... she would have kept going but needed more and more frequent injections and we just decided it was time. We wanted to retire her relatively sound. We had to laser some cysts off her uterus and she caught first try for us. This year we didn't get her in foal, but are trying again in 2017. |

Location: MD | I retired my good Paint mare to the breeding shed this year, at 16. We have been managing some stifle issues for a few years now and last year, she required more maintenance than normal. She was still placing at Pro rodeos and was running top of 2D at big shows. She certainly had earned her retirement and I look forward to running her foals. |

That's a good way to put it. This mare has won so much and has been so great in her career. She has "earned" her retirement. |
