Location: North Dakota | I've had two instances where I expected a breakaway halter to break and live up to its name, but I have to say I was rather disappointed each time since they didn't breakaway in the way I would expect them to.
I have these breakaway halters from Weaver: http://www.horse.com/item/weaver-original-breakaway-adj-halter-w-snap/E001017%20AVG%20BLU/?srccode=GPHORSE&gclid=CLDq0ZCw2M4CFUdZhgodhF4FGw&kwid=productads-adid^49016792017-device^c-plaid^109338412668-sku^181765@ADL4HORSE-adType^PLA
One time, the panic snap on my homemade lead rope was the thing that broke and released the horse. The second time, a little piece of metal in one of the buckles broke, to release the horse.
Of course, my understanding of this breakway halter is that the leather piece is supposed to be the thing that breaks.
So..... does anyone have a recommendation of a better breakaway halter? I'd thought about a plain leather halter, but sometimes those can be expensive.
I like to use breakaway halters when I haul my horses, because I tie them in the trailer. If we were to get into a wreck or if a horse were to fall down, I don't want them to "hang" themselves.

Location: Texas!! | I have seen people use a piece of string or small rubber band where he lead rope attaches to the halter. I haven't every tried it but maybe someone else on this board has.... |

So are you saying the Weaver halter didn't break away? Or you are just concerned that it won't?
I bought a halter from Chick's saddlery that had no issue breaking away. The crown piece is a cheesy leather lol If you are looking to just tie the horse I think the smartpak product is a good option.
It was this one: http://www.chicksaddlery.com/page/CDS/PROD/DH1264

| If you want something to break get a cheaper halter, or just a cheaper thinner replacement for the crown. Weaver leather tends to be a bit thicker, so not as easy to break. |

| Are you looking for a turnout halter or to tie with? For turnout I would forgo the halter or rig it up with a smaller zip tie if it is needed for turnout.
For tying, all mine tie well but at jackpots etc we tie baling twine to the trainer rings and run lead ropes through that. If they do pull the twine breaks before the trailer ring. |

They don't wear anything for turnout. |

How do you like these?
I like this idea, as it is something I could snap quickly to the halter when I load them in the trailer, rather than having to leave a loop of bailing twine on the halter.
Has anyone tried this? http://www.ridingwarehouse.com/Tie_Safe_Velcro_Breakaway_Horse_Trailer_Tie/descpage-TSTT.html
I like the idea of having the leadrope breakaway rather than the halter. I've always used trailer ties such as these, but maybe it would be just as easy to find a leadrope that breaks away, than the halter. |

Me too, then I don't have to worry about my horse hurting themselves. If they need to get away, they will still have something to catch them with. Of course, trailing lead ropes are not all that safe, either.
Oh, I see you meant for in the trailer. I am no help for that.

Missed that, usually just skim through and must have skipped it, my mistake.
I'm cheap so I'd probably just use twine. I like the concept of the Velcro tie, but I see my mouthy horses finding it neat and setting themselves free. They like to find ways to untie themselves as it is. |

I love them! I've used the same ones for over 2 years and they still work perfectly. |
