My horse's tail is thinning at the top. The rest of the tail is really long and drags the ground. When I first noticed it, I thought it was the little mare next to him chewing his tail. She was moved and it started to resolve itself. Now, its started again. Can't blame this new neighbors because there weren't any in the stalls on each side. I recently Power Pac'd him and he looks good. No grain - diet is alfalfa and bermuda. He also gets alfalfa/bermuda blend pellets to eat his magnesium.

Help .... can't hide it with a "comb over"! LOL

My filly is having the same issue...showed my vet and he said "its a summer itch thing" and made no big deal of it. Her fecal came back negative and she's on a forage only diet, so.. who knows .Her tail head sure is ratty looking tho :/

We also have that problem every now and then. Some it is the bugs, others allergies, sometimes even worms (since you Power Packed him he should be good on that though). You might want to try something like MTG first to see if that helps (it helps some of ours others not so much!). Cut-Ost has also helped one of ours. Usually when I see them itching I give them 10cc dex every other day, then every week after the 1st lower it by 1cc until about 4-5 cc is all they are getting, then I stop the dex. The dex is really the only thing that has worked well for us. There is just something with our area (swampy) that makes every horse itch (it's hard to find one around here that doesn't!) If you find something that does work well please let me know! It sure is aggravating to deal with :)

Spray it with an itch reliever such as Vetericyn Hot Spot Spray or Regular Vetericyn.

You can also try Micro Tek Max Strength Medicated Shampoo.

Thanks for the suggestions. I will look into some of these suggestions.

What's weird is that I don't see him "itching" or scratching - - unless I'm just not there when he does it.

Put pasted wormer for about 3 days around anus. It is usually pinworms around anus. Pull hair with finger on tail make sure hair not ingrown, then Use MTG on top tail hair will kill fungus and grow back hair
