| Looking for the actual ingredients in Oxygen's Bleeder Stop.
My appendix gelding has had a FEW DROPS of visible blood maybe 2 or 3 times in the 5+ years I've owned him so I never really thought too much about it. It's starting to nag at me, especially because it seems like he takes a long time to recover (especially when it's hot). It doesn't seem like that big of a deal, but it's just one of those things I keep in the back of my head and wonder about as I get to be a smarter horse owner.
Considering just trying something mild like Oxy's Bleeder Stop but refuse to spend money on something without understanding the ingredients.
Thought about THE PulmonEZ but, honestly, I'm intimidated by the fasting period.

| Just my personal opinion, but I had my gelding on Bleeder Stop for a good 4mos, because the sales rep from Oxygen kept telling me yes I'll be able to ditch lasix, but anytime I didn't use lasix he coughed pretty good after my runs, so I wasn't sold on this product. |

Lasix. Nothing works but Lasix..
ditto!
I don't remember who started the fb post but many of the rodeo girls in the top 15, futurity trainers, and just other industry ppl were commenting on the "magic" supplements and how they allow you to go off lasix and then your horse can "magically" get a lung infection.
I personally know this can happen. Don't believe gimmicks. Go for fact based and science backed products.

For horses that are true bleeders--as in, they have EIPH, I totally agree. |

Location: God's country...aka TEXAS | I'm an Oxy rep - so hopefully I can clear this up. Bleeder Stop is not a "cure all" to stop all bleeding issues in horses. It AIDES in reducing the amount of bleeding and therefore reducing the amount of lasix. If your horse is a severe bleeder, you aren't going to be able to get off lasix completely. If you use about 3-4cc of lasix, you should be able to get off of it after about a month of bleeder stop AND oxygen 2X, which is the recommended bleeder program. The oxygen 2X boosts the lung capacity by strengthening the elasticity of the lungs. If you use more lasix normally, you should be able to REDUCE the amount of lasix you are giving significantly. I have done this with several personal horses and had great results. To the OP, the active ingredients in bleeder stop are vitamin K (a natural coagulant) and a proprietary blend of herbs and vitamins (vitamin c, e, etc) to help boost the immune system keeping the lungs from getting infected. Please feel free to PM me if you have other questions! |

| I would add that visible blood is a poor judgement of what is going on. Typically for you to see blood you need gravity to help get blood from the lungs out the nose.
So if you run, walk out, and then tie to the trailer the worst of the blood may have coagulated in the lungs by the time the horse can put his head fully down again and have a path from the lungs out the nose.
Not saying it can't happen differently, and coughing can help force it up too - coughing fits after a run are a big red flag to me IMO.
I personally think a LOT more horses bleed at some point than we think due to the fact they often don't bleed out. I pay close attention to mine after a run and try to tie them long or take them back to their stalls where they can eat hay off the ground for the biggest likelihood that I actually see blood if they bleed. |

Not true, I had a bad bleeder I used to run on lasix. I started following a STRICT diet and EXERCISE program and started giving her the DAC racehorse formula with vitamin K and have had her scoped many runs after and has not bled since. I weaned her off lasix slowly and had vet scoping to make sure she wasn't a silent bleeder.
Every horse is different just like people our body chemistry is not the same, different things worked with different horses. |

I agree. I ran my horse for years trying to figure out why he was giving me alley problems & not running as hard as I knew he could. Never any coughing after a run and never saw any blood. When he did start finally bleeding out, it was 3+ hours after a run. Even though I would let him put his head down to graze & drink after a run no blood ever came out. It finally came out 3+ hours after my run, after getting home from the race and him putting his head down to eat out of his floor feeder... blood out both nostrils. Don't really understand why it wasn't coming out before with his head down, but maybe it took him relaxing at home. IDK I suspect he had been bleeding all along, although not bad but still bleeding. Since I started running on Lasix he is MORE than excited to get in the alley & is running harder than he ever has. |

This is absolutely NOT true in all cases. In some cases, yes, but not in all cases. My current open horse does not run on lasix and has not run on lasix since 2013. He is a true diagnosed EIPH horse. It takes a lot of work, but he does not need lasix as long as I put forth the effort to do everything else that he needs.
To the OP, just my personal opinion, the quickest way to go from not a big deal to a major medical problem, is to blow off bleeding of any sort. Just because you see no blood or only a drop or two, does NOT mean it's a mild case.
My gelding NEVER had a drop of blood. Not once. But had I not picked up on the rest of the symptoms and treated him, he could have potentially died from a lung infection. |

| So happy to see this thread pop back up! I appreciate the insight and the additional kick in the pants to try to help him. I'm nearly certain he's a bleeder that doesn't show at this point. |

Location: South Central Florida | If I own a bleeder, it will never run with out some lasix. We had a National Champion mare that NEVER bled out. Then one day after winning the Arcadia Florida Rodeo, 2 hours after the win...she coughed for the first time and blew black and brown Gooo all over the wall of the trailer. Proceeded to do it 3 more times. She had been bleeding and it was pooling in the lung and she had a major infection by the time we got to a very and scoped. That was 2003, and we tried all the homeopathic products on the market at the time. All the guarantees, promises...she scoped every single time with varying g amounts of blood. Lasix was the only thing that worked 100% of the time.Fast forward...we own an Open Rodeo horse...big mare that wins. She started bleeding visibly about 4 years after we owned her and we're winning on her. She bled through 3 of the top "bleeding products" on the marker. She is very fit, we do lots of different exercises to work on lung capacity. She is on DAC Race mineral and Animal Element detox. But she still gets 5cc of Lasix and if it's really hot (we live in Florida) 3cc Ventipulman. We have scoped her and zero blood, and no sign of previous bleeding.I will never run her with out it. That one lung infection was a life lesson and it will change how you look at it.Plus everytime they bleed, your developing scar tissue which WILL reduce lung capacity in the long haul. We have never had to increase the Lasix and I give AE and DAC credit for that. She has been running game on it since 2011 I think. For those that feel they get less run with Lasix, have you ever used it with B12? Our vet has always prescribed it that way. Basically equal amounts given IV 2 hours out. |
