I believe my gelding is having a bit of a selenium toxicity experience, as his coat isn't quite as good as I think it could be and his mane and tail are becoming very thin. For those of you who've gone through something like this, what did you end up doing? I've pulled my gelding off pasture and I am feeding him a high quality grass/alfalfa mix hay (tested). Did you have your local co-op mix you a selenium free grain? Other products you've used, etc, any suggestions. Thanks so much!

Location: The best kept secret in TX		I don't feed grain anymore, like a lot of others. If you do a quick search here on BHW you can read all the feed threads that explain why. Horses don't need grain in my opinion.... 

I would get blood drawn at the vet and see what he is deficient in. Contact WinWillows here on BHW and get him to go over a nutrition plan for you and your horse. He knows his stuff. Right down to the lbs and half pounds per day of everything your horse needs. 

Horses only need supplements if they are deficient. The blood test can determine what your horse needs and tell you where your holes in nutrition are.  Keep in mind, your vet will recommend a feed for you but most of the time they are paid to tell you that certain feed is best for your horse....

I have heard that Animal Element Detox works great for this kind of problem. I haven't used it but friends of mine have and you can really see the difference in their horses.
