Breezing, stretching, getting a horse in shape

I am looking for resources to put together a routine/program to get our horses into better physical condition. I am wanting info with quantitative data to back up what is said and what works...not just what may be popular.
As an example, static stretching in humans prior to competition lowers performance, but stretching needs to be included in a weekly workout routine. I would assume the same is true for horses but I do not know for sure. Would you use the same time workout routine for TB on the track as QH on the barrels? These are examples of the type information I am looking for.
Thanks in advance.

Suggestion: Adding short sprints with slow lope between. Ex: I have a quarter mile track that I run the long stretches, then walk/trot/lope the short. It's my version of equine HIIT training. Which is proven effective in humans.
