My Heart Be Happy Posts: 9159 Location: Arkansas	Chandler asked me what to plant on one of his pond levees that would be good for the horses. (He just redid the levee and needs something to keep erosion at bay.) I'm clueless and need y'all to help me please

We have Bermuda on the pond too. This levee is all dirt now since being reworked today, and I was wondering if there is anything that can be planted at this time of year?

I'm clueless and need y'all to help me please Do you a 50-50 mixture of plain old horse feed whole oats and rye grass ... with some stout fertilizer since you are on dug dirt .... Check with your local co-op feed store they can bulk mix you 21-21-21 or triple 25 .... they can also mix your oats and rye in the fertilizer This hotter fertilizer costs a few dollars more than weaker fertilizer such as triple 8 or triple 10 ... buy the hotter 21-25 and not be disappointed .. since the dug dirt will not have any nutrients in it ... Most will loan you a fertilizer buggy for free if you buy a ton or more of fertilizer ... set it for 100-200#'s per acre and make two passes across your pond dam ... getting close to each edge on each pass ... or set it at 100#s and make 4 passes on the dam ... Then make a pass all the way around the edge of the pond .... including the back edge of the pond dam ... Buggy is wheel driven so go as fast as you can and still be safe ... this will sling everything in a bigger arc to cover the sides of the dam .... Use any extra on the wettest parts of your pasture and where horses have eaten the grass down .... if land is not too ruff .. you can use your dually to spread the fertilizer .... wash the buggy out with water on your pasture or yard.. and spray truck down especially underneath, wheels, tires and wheel welds ... And DO NOT FORGET TO DISABLE THE WHEEL DRIVE OF THE TRAILER BEFORE YOU LEAVE HOME TO TAKE THE BUGGY BACK .... Early Next spring.. like late March or early April ... you can take one of the hand operated sack type whirly bird seeders and do Bermuda grass seeds on the dam part ... if you can catch a late snow ... do it then .. snow melt will keep the small seeds from washing off the sides of the dam ... Accident Prone Posts: 22277 Location: 100 miles from Nowhere, AR	We use ryegrass both for winter pasture and erosion control on bare dirt. Next spring, mow it down short and plant your Bermuda. It save me quite a bit of hay in late winter/early spring, but I also have to limit access for some horses because they get too fat on it. On the farm fields, we're using cereal rye as a cover crop, but I'm not sure how that is for grazing.
