Pretty much my whole family has a bad stomach - starting with my dad. We've always joked about it being the "Smith stomach". Mine got worse after I had my son and actually started IBS symptoms not just a bad stomach. My doctor told me to change my diet etc. As long as I eat fairly "clean" - no sugar, cokes, dairy, etc. mine is fine. But honestly who WANTS to stay away from the good stuff ALL the time. Not me! My dad's doctor put him on a Magnesium supplement and he quit having stomach problems. So, my two sisters and I decided to try it...IBS gone! I can load up on sweets & cokes (although I try not to make it a habit) and as long as I've taken a magnesium supplement I never have any problems. I only take it every other day.

I have IBD (Crohns). I am on meds which are pretty strong. Still need to know the triggers. Sometimes it just comes on. You may want to get checked to make sure it is just IBS and not IBD. Dairy is a huge one...love ice cream...it does not love me!

i had ulcerative colitis in the 80s-90s and tried everything...drugs and an experimental surgery. unfortnately I ended up having to have the colon removed. i am now in my mid-50s and have lived a healthy life ever since. while i still from time to time hate that i have to wear an appliance, it has never kept me from living life and doing all the things i want to do...best of luck to you in managing it.

I have very severe IBS-D.  I used the low FODMAP diet to help identify my triggers (google low FODMAP).  I am on several prescription drugs as well as lots of imodium and a drug called Lotronex which can only be prescribed by a gastroenterologist. High fiber foods and fruits make my symptoms worse. I have cut out all artificial sweetners at the advice of my doctor and high fructose corn syrup as I have issues with the fructose in fruits. The drugs have cut my symptoms in  half but I'm not anywhere close to normal.  I have finally gotten it to the point where I can trail ride again, but it takes enormous amounts of Imodium plus my other drugs .   Oh, and no more coffee, boy I miss that.

Yes I am learning about the food triggers. Have cut down on the coffee but I know I still just need to eliminate it. I am drinking more tea as that doesn't seem to bother me. I can't do spicy foods, fatty foods, I am learning to watch out for the frutose and reading labels very, very carefully. No alcohol, am cutting down on portions that seems to help a bunch. Mine is worse in the mornings. I get low belly cramps after I am up. Mine is not the D all the time, sometimes just loose but I probably go 3, 4, 5 sometimes 6 times in the mornings. When I have the low back pain, I can generally tell the next morning what it is going to be like.
