Location: Sweet Home Alabama | I'm interested to hear what everyone does to prep their horses before a big run. And the after run care as well. Like, what pastes do you believe in? Do they wear magnetic blankets right up until saddling? Do you ice their legs? Blah blah blah. That sorta stuff. I get that every horse is different and age plays a factor, but let me know! This is something I've been wondering might up my game. |

| I use soft rides for trailering and if they are on black top/ hard surface. Always wrap there legs and use hock wraps. If cold bot sheet to warm her muscles up. Ive tried all of the pastes and I think they are a waste of money IMO. I think the best thing that you can do is provide a good feed and exercise program. If they are fed and in shape they should do their jobs well. If they are in shape they are less likely to cause an injury. Post run I walk them, offer water and hose them. I like the ice vibes then poltice and I put soft rides back on. Liniment all over. Hay and a big kiss and then a drink for me ;) |

Location: Georgia | Disclaimer - I dont have 1D horses so maybe take everything with a grain of salt lol.
Pre-Run: Each of my horses has a slightly different routine. My 21 year old gelding gets a low dose of bute the night before and morning of the run. He also gets Oxy-Boost Plus about 2 hours before he runs. It just helps him recover faster. I really think Oxygen puts alot of thought into their profucts and I have seen good results with the numerous pastes that I have used. My two mares get a product called Zylkene about 3 1/2 hours before they run because they are both pretty excitable. Its an all-natural calming agent that I have seen AMAZING results with. I love my BOT products. I will usually wrap their legs with the no-bows on the way to the barrel race if I have time. If not, I usually put them on as soon as I get there. I havent tried PHT but I've been itching to buy a blanket for my old guy. My warm-up routine is very basic. Go lope some circles both ways, do a few rollbacks, make sure they are nice and bendy...all that fun stuff. Im usually on about 15-20 minutes before I run.
Post-Run: After I run, I typically walk the horse out for about 10 minutes. Then I walk back in the chute (during a drag), get off, loosen girth and hand walk back to trailer. After I unsaddle I will hose off, depending on the weather, and then I use my ice boots on front and back legs for 20 minutes each - 40 minutes total. Icing is new to me. I have only been doing it for a few months but so far I like the results. Their legs appear cleaner the following day. But thats pretty much it for my after run routine. Occasionally I will put on the BOT wraps after a run but typically I dont.
Edit: Forgot to add that I also use my softrides when trailering and when walking them around on hard surfaces at bigger shows. Love those things!

Location: Sweet Home Alabama | Thanks y'all! I recently came across Flowboots and want to give them a shot. And the PHT products are high on my 'want' list too. |

I haven't heard of the Zylkene before. Do you give it everyday no matter what all the time or just so many days before a race? Thanks. |
