Location: The Great Northwest | A colt still. The farrier was out trimming and tried to trim him and got the left front trimmed. He sort of blew when tried to trim the right hoof. The back legs he is not liking to give his foot but will kick. The farrier seems to think he can get him trimmed. Should I let the farrier try again? |

| He is just doing it for the farrier? Not when you are working with his feet? |

He isn't nice when working with the feet. I wonder if I could give him some ace to just help get the right front trimmed? |

I would NOT do this. Colts will be colts. You need to get out there everyday and work with him on picking up his feet. That is the only thing that will help him get better. |

The more you handle his feet the better he will get. My babys I would always be picking up their feet and patting the bottom of them every time I was around them, I would hose them off and I would run the water over their legs so they would get used to a different feel to their little legs, the feet were always my main focus..

This was in mind. Thanks for confirming that Ace would just slow him down. |

 You get what you give

Location: Texas | Ace will take the edge off if you give it to him before hes upset. If he's already upset, it won't do much at all. I would try to just get it done the long and hard way before using any drugs.
However, be aware that ace isn't exactly recommended in male horses because of the risk of penile prolapse. He's a baby, but he's a he... it's a low risk but an important one to keep in mind.

Location: Freestone TX | I work with my foals' feet from the time they are born. Having said that, I still give them a dollop of dermosadan gel on the first trim if I have one that has a reactive personality. I don't want there to ever be a fight. Some foals are gentler than others. I only dose the foal if I think they might be scared of the farrier. It's one thing for a foal to be ok with their daily handler picking up their feet, but some are scared at this young age when a stranger approaches them. I don't want my foal or farrier hurt. It only takes one, maybe two times; by the third trip the foal is older and more confident and accepts the trim without a fight. |

| Babies will be babies.
Work with him on it daily, multiple times a day if you can.
