Location: Oklahoma | Has anyone ever had this problem got horse from racetrack he pulled back before we could get him untied he sat down and went over on his side nice and easy. He started losing lots of weight and feet was bad so I turned out year in half. His weight is great and feet are great and you can lead on 4 wheeler and he can trot and lope and run as smooth as silk! But if you saddle to ride you can't get him out of a walk his ears go lopsided and he turns head toward your boot and grinds teeth constantly. He has been treated for ulcers and no points showing his hocks and stifles and front feet been crated all good there. Sometimes he sore in back sometimes not. He hasn't had a saddle on in a year so not saddle making him sore tho I did check fit. Next step thinking bout xraying the neck. If that clean I don't know what else I can do for him. Has anyone went thru this that can give me a little insight? He is fine with just saddle on but it's when there is weight in saddle I weigh 165. This is not a training issue this is a pain issue. Also been to 3 different kinds of chiropracter and massages. Thanks! |

| I would have a vet go over him with a fine tooth comb - from TMJ all the way to his tail. |

Location: Oklahoma | He has been by more than one. Can't do a bone scan. Bc vets don't know why I am asking here surely not the only one that has or had this problem. Don't think it's kissing spine bc he was fine til he sat and pulled back at trailer but will keep that in mind. Thanks all

| Wow, how frustrating! Because it started after setting back, I keep thinking of something in the poll/neck area. I hope you find the problem and then pass the knowledge on to us. |

| If things started to go south after pulling back at the trailer, then I would X-ray the neck for sure. |

Location: MT | I had a gelding who pulled back. The rope broke and he flipped over and landed on his back with the saddle on. It broke the tree in my saddle and he had ribs out on one side.
Maybe something to check. Although, I would think the chiro would have been able to tell if he's already been to a chiro.

| I have a friend same type senerio - hers has been turned out 2 years she took him to dr. Nicholes in marrieta Oklahoma he has only seen him once but she says hes much improved - I know he injected his hip ( not with usual injection meds) - she noticed within 3 days improvement - I have not met this vet yet but I do know I have 2 friends that have gone to him and both have tried several other vets chiropractors acupressure etc. nothing has helped but this guy has both horses back to work within a week of seeing him--( both horses also did a pull back fall over and the one that has been off 2 years his was a very soft fall over so just cuz it doesn't look bad to us doesn't mean nothing |

| I'd check his pelvis.
Freak thing happened to me with a horse that set back. He set back same as yours, sat and then laid over on his side. Got him up and within 5 minutes he sat back down again, couldn't get back up, blood started to sweat out. He ruptured an artery in his hind end. Was dead within the hour.
He could have a pinched nerve. By looking back at you and grinding, I'd say somewhere in the hind end. |

Location: Oklahoma | How do you check pelvis besides palpating? He has been palpated and vet said he was good there. Thanks again for the responses! |

Rectal examination
This could have nothing to do with the pull-back episode and might be something neuro, I'd have a neurological exam done too.
Have you got on bareback to see if he presents the same behavior? Maybe its a poor fitting a saddle and he's a wimp.....
I'd take my saddle and ride at the vet so they can see, if you haven't already done it. |
