What a wonderful time of year. . . . . Tonight was the first blanket night of this year for us, and of course I worry they will get themselves (at least one of them) in a bind. So it'll be a long night for Momma until Sean feeds at 7:30 in morning! And I want to give him props because he brushed all 5 muddy monsters, fed, got the de-icer going, and blanketed before I got home from work

I was dreading having to come home after work and going to barn and getting all that done in dark and cold. So I really like him tonight!!

By the time I go to bed tonight it will feel like -28 below here in ND. This is double layers kind of weather for my mare who is a wimp. Meanwhile...my just about 24 year old gelding who grows a huge coat and gets extra 'fluffy' for winter is never bothered one bit by the weather up here. Funny how they all can be so different in their needs.

I don't even know how you do it up there in the winter!!  On thew news last night they showed some stuff from ND and all the snow and cold..... Wow!
It's 30 degrees here this morning with a wind chill of 27.  We are all struggling with it.  Even the horses seem grumpy.  Just having to bundle up every time I go outside is annoying.  The only one who seems to enjoy this coldness is my German Shepherd...

We keep a couple blankets on hand but let them stay nekked with free choice hay for the most part. We did have one shivering the other morning when we got down in the low teens for the first time, before we got the chix nets hung back up. An hour or so later he was good to go.

When I use to board and had an indoor and rode all winter i had blankets on everything, I think it's easier on them when you ride to have the hair laid down. Now that I'll be taking a few months off we let me get fluffy.

Did not get too cold here, but did put blankets on all of them. Seems to bother a couple of them when we have a large temp drop like yesterday, and we have a couple of new ones that not sure about yet.....so, just wrapped them all up. Better safe than sorry.

Honestly I am not even sure how we do it but it's just life. I am pretty cold hardy and the temps don't bother me much. I will admit it is not plesant to be out in -30 feeding horses but the other seasons of the year are pretty good and most of the horses handle the temps really well.

I normally don't blanket anything but I broke down and put a blanket on my 26 yr old, former, broodmare.  Its super cold here right now and I decided she needed some help staying warm.

He really can be! Since his back has been better and I've been helping Chandler with the fish on top of my real job, Sean has really stepped up. He's pretty much handling all things horses by himself! The blankets will come off in the am and we should be ok for awhile. Everyone would probably be ok w/o them except for Dan, but I can't stand to not be an equal opportunity Momma!

I can't imagine the negative degrees!! Me and my wimpy horses will have to stay here in the hot South. Chandler texted me at 4:45 this am after he got to his deer stand at the League (his deer camp about an hour north of us). He said "I'm here. (I ask him to always let me know he made it safe.) And Momma, the 'feel like' temp is 19." I could FEEL thru the text he wanted to be back home in the bed. . . .

Well it's funny because when we get to 90s in the summer up here I am pretty much non-functional. I can't stand it being hot out. I suppose that comes from being used to being cold most of year.

When we hit 100 with 110 heat index or higher i almost (almost!!!) think how nice it would be to live in a cold state----then I think about winter and blankets and how tough you ladies are. And how tough I'm not, so I tell myself to buck up!!!! And make sure all the fans are turned on at the barn
