Hey everyone I've been MIA for a while but need some help . My wifes retired barrel horse came up lame about 1.5 weeks ago, we found that he had an abscess in his hoof. Within the next 24 hours the abscess blew out the sold of his hoof but was still sore so we called out the vet. The vet found the abscess was also about to blow out the coronary band so they helped that along and flushed it all out. He was put on antibiotics and we were soaking and wrapping the hoof, 2 days later we noticed discharge from the bulbs of his hoof. The vet came back out cut the toe of his hoof way back and cleaned out the area of the abscess so it could drain and injected die so you could see the travel path of the abscess in X-rays. Sure enough it was one abscess that was so bad it ruptured in 3 different locations. However, in the X-rays there was a dark spot on the tip on his coffin bone that they are concerned about that could be a coffin bone infection. We will know more on Thursday they came back out and do more X-rays, as of right now though he will only move by hoping on 3 legs. We are considering taking him to NCSU to look into possible surgery for the Coffin Bone Debridement if it is found that the infection is whats causing his pain. Has anyone every gone through this procedure, recovery, rough price or anything???

This is the guy I would take all my questions to about a coffin bone debridement. He flies all over the country working on the most complex cases.
