This happened to a good friends horse. No fencing, cattle guards, holes, etc. Turned out with 7 other horses. No obvious signs of struggle as far as hoofprint tracking goes. It appears that he was running, planted his feet for a stop, and then this occurred... wondering what anyone's thoughts would be on how it could happen or if you've seen it before. Maybe it's common... just seemed like an odd injury to sustain without him having gotten stuck...

That's sad.  Sorry for your friend.  Compound fractures are definitely somewhat odd.  Just looks like it popped out of the socket. :(

That is super strange... Looks like he stopped and his leg just kept going. Could a damaged/weak joint just give out?

A friend I boarded with had this happen. Mare was always a little "off." She just seemed to not always be with it, we don't know if there was some sort of deficiency or something but one day she literally pivoted and bone popped right out of her shoulder. She wasn't running, not muddy, nothing she got stuck in. Sad deal nonetheless.

Prayers for your friend.

Thanks guys. Luckily, they believe they found him fairly quickly after the injury and promptly put him down. Very sad situation. I know it doesn't matter what horse it was, but I feel bad for her because they were just starting to work together instead of against each other.

Yes sorta, but mine happened when she ran into another horse. The hock snapped completely in two. She ran around the entire pasture with her leg flopping. Once she got to me she tried to stop and fell down then it was hanging on by pieces of skin.

I'm sorry this happened to your friend. I know it's the worst thing you can possibly witness to one of your horses.

It could have been as simple as this horse laying down and another horse
stepped on his ankle and this horse feeling the pressure wrenched his
ankle away while trying to jump up off the ground.

As we all know if there is a way for a horse to hurt itself ...
it will find a way ...

The strangest way I've had one try to hurt themselves was with a bull snap.
As you know the spring loaded tongue on a bull snap has to be held
open in order to hook it on anything and the hook portion is so blunt
you can't force it to poke a hole in a plastic sack.

I came down to the barn one morning and found a yearling standing
by a pipe fence I had half hitched a lead rope around to keep from
forgetting it if I laid it on the ground.
This colt had the bull snap poked all the way thru the skin an inch above the
corner of his mouth, as if it was a new type of lip bit, luckily he
had been taught to tie.
He was just standing there with a look of
puzzlement in his eyes. I unhitched the lead rope from the fence
and thought it would slip right out of the puncture hole... no such
luck. I tried for almost an hour and then called a neighboring
race training track to get a friend to come help. A vet was there
and said .. I gotta go see this ... laughing

Friend and vet came over and all three of us struggled with it
for another 30 minutes.... while we were standing there catching
our breath ... the dang thing just fell out of his mouth.!!
All we could do .... was look at each other astounded ...

I smeared some furazone in the outside hole and let the saliva
heal the hole inside his mouth ... it healed quickly and no scar.

Vet said I was lucky the colt was a very calm individual and had
stood there most of the night (it had some swelling). If he had
panicked he would have ripped the side of his face and half his
lips would have ripped off too. Vet said, it was one of those
impossible happenings that turned out well!!

It is always tuff to find one of your young ones seriously injured ...
God Bless you for your quick decision and actions!!

Yes, I have had something very similar other than mine broke about 3 inches above the ankle and didn't come out of ths skin. It was horrible. She didn't come down to eat that afternoon and found her at the very back of the field, just standing, trying to balance on 3 legs, weak. Called the vet out to put her down right there.

No holes, no anything around. It was so horiible. She hadn't been turned out a lot at her previous place and she just loved to run. She had about 13 acres to let loose.

I didn't cope well for a long time and thought I would be done with horses becasue I had just lost my old guy about a year before and my dog about 2 weeks before. I had only had her a month and 3 days. It took me a year before I got ME another horse or even thought about it. I had a horse kind of fall in my lap though and fell head over heels in love with him. He was a wreck and we healed together. God works in His own time and I learned that lesson through all of this.

My heart breaks for your friends. Prayers for them.
