My gelding has this weird habit where he will stretch out and act like he needs to pee but wont (or maybe will release about half of his bladder, then keep acting like he needs to pee).  This normally happens towards the end of our ride or after I untack him. Sometimes he will pee a couple of times.  I'm thinking maybe he is pee shy or only likes peeing on a surface that wont splash onto his legs??   He hangs in the relaxed position pretty often as well.

Yesterday night he stopped about 3 times on the way home from the arena, like he needed to pee.  After I got him unsaddled he peed about half his bladder then stopped.  I turned him loose and he proceeded to act like he was going to pee about 4 times before he finally found the perfect spot and peed the remainder of his bladder.  He was stretching out and really cocking his head around to the right side (this was new).  Is this normal? Please give me opinions and personal experiences.

Things I have done recently to unsure this is not a serious issue:
1. He gets his sheath cleaned/bean check regularly and was just cleaned at the vet clinic December 2nd.
2. I mentioned this weird habit to the vet and we ran some blood work which came back normal.
3. He did have inflammation in his SI which the vet said may cause him to feel the need to pee, he has since been injected on December 2nd.
4. He does not get excessive amounts of protein.
5. I just put him back on Marshmallow root powder from Cur-Ost, it has mild anti-inflammatory and soothing properties which seem to target the urinary.
6. Off all over processed grains. Gets RG, alfalfa cubes and Bermuda.

I dont know what else to do besides a urine sample.

He might have kidney or bladder stones. If he continues I would have him checked.

Oh great... What are some other signs of EPM? He is riding great and doesnt real have anything else going on that I notice.  How did you get your guy diagnosed? Is there a test?

That kind of what I am thinking.  How does a vet check for kidney or bladder stones?

Run N Rate could probably answer a lot of your questions on kidney or bladder stones.

About 60% of horses have EPM. So most vets don't even test, they treat. Weight loss, obscure lameness, spookiness are just some of the signs. There are some tests you can do. Cross hind leg over the other one. Your horse should move the leg right back with no hesitation. There is also acupuncture points you can check.

Could also be a minor bladder infection, sometimes in the early stages it won't show in blood work.

I would collect a urine and send it for culture and analysis.

He doesn't have any symptoms of cushings and I wouldn't say this is excessive urination.

Or it might be normal FOR HIM. My horse off the track is the EXACT same way. I do run a bag of SLH kidney through mine once in a while every few months. But mine has always been that way.

Hes only been doing this for about 6 months.  Ive run him through some AE detox but if nothing comes of a urinalysis I may try some type of kidney supp/herb
