Location: cincinnati, oh | Give me your experiences with dealing with mares with hormonal issues. My mare turns into a pig in the winter. For years I implanted with the Synovex S cattle implant but since moving I havent really found anyone over here that does it. She gets very sluggish and just doesnt fire in the winter. When she was younger she was a trainwreck so I started the implant. Body sore, nervous, buddy sour and flat just wouldnt run and obviously in heat all the time. Had the vet check years ago and he said she just produced really large folicles that were hard to pass making her heat cycles basically never ending. That is when we started the implants. He said she may grow out of it as she aged. Now she doesnt show all of those other symptoms but she flat just doesnt fire at all and she is a little body sore but nothing extreme. Just a little topuchy in her girth and flanks when you brush her. Had vet over here draw blood. The symptoms mimic so many things like ulcers, bleeding internally not externally or even cysts of some sort. We did a CBC and checked progesterone levels. Here CBC came back totally normal so the vet doesnt feel she is bleeding from ulcers or lungs but said progesterone levels are low indicating she is in heat despite the fact its December and most mares dont cycle this time of year. Vet's recommendation is a shot of HCG to take her out of heat then Depo shots every 21 days. I have tried the Silver Lining herbs last year and didnt see much result. When you run a 4d time at the rodeo its a little ridiculous. I just want to make sure I'm using the most current and effective treatment for this issue. She doesnt perfomr when she is in heat basically so I have to find some way to keep her working and not being a pig.
?I will note also she has had chiro adjustment, accupuncture, teeth done and feet reset on a regular schedule and she doesnt show any lameness. She makes the prettiest slow runs you'll ever see! LOL |

Location: SW North Dakota | We used BET microparticles on my daughter's miserable mare. Worked like a miracle! Even her eye softened- she was SOOO much more comfortable. It's kind of spendy at $140/month shipped, but it worked so well, it was worth it!

Location: California | I use BetPharm Alrenogest as well but give the injection every 12 days. Like the above poster, even her eye seems to soften. It's been a game changer for us! |

Our mare seemed to last about 3 weeks, but it worked so quickly, we'd eek another week out of it to save some $$. If this was a mare we were hauling more than just JPs and JH rodeos, we would sure give it every 21 days. It really made a BIG difference for this horse- well worth the money! |

| Nothing worked on two different mares I owned except spaying them. The retained follicles caused a lot of discomfort for them both. With the second mare it got so that I could trot her down the road and tell you not only which side she was ovulating on , but also came close to predicting the size of her affected ovary. Spaying each of them was SO worth it to me.
Hope you have better luck! |

so you spent $300+ per month!?!?!Β
If you were referring to me, then no. The injections every 12 days come in a 7 dose vial that can ship ground (vs overnight) and I think it's around $200 for the 7 dose vial. |

Oh gotcha! shew! I thought each dose was $140! So for $200 you were getting 84 days worth of treatment basically |

REALLY?! OMG, I didn't know there was a package deal! My vet originally told me I HAD to overnight every time and give it within 12 hours of delivery, as it has a very fragile shelf life. While on the phone ordering with BETPharm, I learned you can store it in the fridge for a period of time, so I started ordering 2-3 vials @ $125 each. I'd love to learn about the 7 dose option! Don't you have to use immediately once you mix it? |

Yes, there is a 7 dose vial that you can ship ground and then use when you need. I just rechecked and it's now $250 a vial. My vet told me about both options, but recommended this one because it was cheaper, my horse is fine with injections, and I can slightly vary the frequency of doses to fit her needs. The fall is really hard on her so I give it every 11 days versus 12. In the spring I give it every 11 1/2 days which yes, the 12 hours makes a difference lol. It's crazy to see the dramatic results with this medicine. Here's the website where you can find it, https://vetrx.betpharm.com/products-29/vet-compounds/progestins.html
