| I have a colt that was born late. He was born july 27th, 2015. So he is almost 1 1/2 years old. He is on the small side. I sticked him today at 13.2 at the hip and 12.3 at the wither. He is the second foal out of my mare. The other baby reached 14.2 full grown at age 6. The mare is 15.1 and the sire of the other foal was 15.3. The colt that's 1 1/2 years old, his sire was 14.3. I'm just hoping he makes 14.2 or something. To me he looks like a 9 or 10 month old weanling. I am starting to see that my mare throws small babies lol. How many of you have had small long yearlings this size? How big did they get?ETA- the mare is lady bugs moon, jet deck, azure te bred. The sire of the yearling is a grandson of leo. Her other baby that's older is bugs alive in 75, jet deck. So all good old race stuff.

| Anything that is born on July 27th in Tx/Ok is expected to be stunted for life.
How did you get into a breeding situation in August//September??
Especially with winter coming on in your area of the country??
Foals are born with an internal heater so they can endure spring time chilly
weather .... they have no air conditioning other than panting and being
stressed ...
Also take into consideration your mare may be a poor milker and a good
feeding program on the pregnant mare and baby along with
worming schedules ... is a must if you want healthy babies.

| The mare wouldn't take each time she was covered. She finally took at the beginning of july 2014. We started covering her the beginning of may at the start of a cycle then ultrasounded her. She didn't take... Covered her again the start of June next cycle. Ultrasounded and she didn't take. Then in the end of June into July for the last time. If she didn't take I was going to biopsy her. She was clean before we started via culture. At this point she was 19 and open for 8 years. So my chances were already slim. Well third time was a charm. She actually had twins so we had to pinch one off.. She was almost 3 weeks over due when she foaled. She was supposed to be due july 2nd... I fed her 4 pound alfalfa pellets, 1 lbs rice bran, 2 lbs ration balancer and grass/ alfalfa mix hay. The colt is fed 3 lbs alfalfa pellets, 1 lbs oats, 1. 5 lbs ration balancer. and grass alfalfa mix hay... Weight wise I never had an issue with either of them during pregnancy, foaling, weaning, ect. I'm pretty much lucky to have him. But he's small.

Location: Wonderful Wyoming | I have a July 4th baby. He's officially 2 which makes me laugh. He's small but he will grow to his potential, what he was born to be. He's been well fed and had a cushy life lol. Don't worry about yours being stunted. By 4yrs old no one will know as long as he has had a good diet.  |

I have a July 4th baby. He's officially 2 which makes me laugh. He's small but he will grow to his potential, what he was born to be. He's been well fed and had a cushy life lol. Don't worry about yours being stunted. By 4yrs old no one will know as long as he has had a good diet.

Location: Illinois | I have a May 26, 2015 stud colt that has been 13.3 hands since last March. He has filled out, but hasn't gone up. He's King Fritz bred, which is notorious for being super slow growers. They typically still grow significantly until 6 years old. Dad is 14.1 and mom is 15.1, but all the babies from the stud have outgrown him and babies from the mare have grown to be 15.3-16.2 with all their studs being under 15 hands. He's 14.1 at the butt, so we'll see what happens this spring. He tends to grow in the spring and stop the rest of the year. If he's not at least 14.1 by summer I will most likely wait until net spring to get on his back. I've seen many be small as 2-3 year olds and shoot up at 4-5 so you never know. Mine eats more than my barrel horse does in heavy work, I just switched him to Ultium Growth almost 2 months ago and he has bulked up so much already, just needs to shoot up now. I won't keep him on it for long because it's like giving a kid a 2 liter of Mt Dew and locking him in a closet. He's starting to get way too energetic for this time of year when I have nowhere to exercise him except daily turnout when the weather is decent. I try not to worry too much about it, they're still young and have a big window to grow still. See what he does this spring. |

He just has short cannon bones. For fun you can string test your baby. Take a measure tape and measure from the middle of the knee to the top of the hoof/coronet band. Whatever it is in inches you convert to hands so 14 1/2 inches = 14.2 hands Of course these aren't always accurate but would be interesting. Here is my mini guy as a new baby.

Aw!!! We a cutie! I wish I could post a pic of my colt when he was born. Can I do it from my phone? He was about that size. Pretty little and could very easily walk under his mom's belly who is 15.1. |

I have had different vets tell me different things. My mare was much fatter than the rest of my mares during her pregnancy. We assumed she would be first to foal (we pasture breed so never know when they are due). I sent the other mares to the new stallion to be live covered and since she hadn't foaled and wasn't happy being alone we brought her in the corral. Finally in July she decided to foal but it was this teeny little brown guy. I talked to the vets about the situation and several said it is possible for them to have a twin, as long as it is in a separate sac (or something along those lines), and abort the one but still retain the other pregnancy. If this is true, it could have easily happened while she was roaming 1000 acre pastures and we would have never seen the fetus...and we had a wet spring so if she had discharge or was bloody, it would have washed away easy enough.
He's a super friendly baby. We won't have him started until he is around 3. Then if he stays sweet my youngest son wants him to be his horse. He named him Batman |

Location: Oklahoma | He's 2. If you are not racing him there is no need to worry about his size yet. My 2yo may be 13 hands, but he has not been pampered. He is turned out with the herd and is growing wide, but not up yet. His Dam is 15.2 & sire is 15.3 but they are both wide as freight trains.
My 3yo did not start to grown up until July 2016, until then he was about 13.2. He grew a hand in 3 months. He stopped growing as fast, but now is bigger than my barrel horse at 15 hands. |

| I had a foal born at 366 days from an older maiden mare. It was very tiny and we could easily carry it in our arms. "She was about the size of a medium dog." I have been assured several times by vet that she will be full size and her size then and now will not determine her final size. She is very smart and healthy. She has huge bones very straight and she looks exactly like her mom who is 16 hands so we will see. The vet did recommend if we breed the mare again to culture everytime we give her 3 mo.,5 mo., 7mo. shots. She was never carrying twins. Look up the term "dismature foal" I had never heard of this but seems to describe my foal. |

| wow! Great info from all you guys! Thanks again! I appreciate it! Babies are just so darn cute! When this colt was born I could pick him up too! My mare never really looked pregnant until she was close to the 10 almost 11 month mark. I won't start this little guy until 3 either. Thanks again! |
