So I have a almost 8 month old daughter. Most of the time I have someone to watch her so I can go out and condition my horses. But on days where no one is available, I was wondering what kind of roundpen exercises some of you do to keep them in shape. Roundpen I can have her with me and in close range too. Any suggestions would be so helpful!! Thanks!

What a great thread. Following as I have little ones at home as well and need ideas for exercises.

Have a close friend who puts her baby in a packand play type tent. Zips her in to sleep or play while she rides. Baby is on opposite side of the fence and she can hear her if she begins to cry. Her baby is a year old tho. It works for her and baby loves to watch her ride.

I was thinking of that too, since I have a pack n play crib that I could set up as well.

Side reins and a training surgicle, will get them round and driving from the rear, builds top lines.

See if you can find an experienced person to teach you some round pen stuff. We use our a lot. You can "tie their nose to their tail" not tight but nough to creat an arc and get them bending at the rib cage. Get that hind foot up and underneath. You can bit them up to the side and get them moving forward. Again not super tight. There is so much you can do but it needs to be done properly and safely for you and the horse. Just remember to start loose when you tie around or bit up so you they don't get scared and freak out and you have a wreck. Good luck!

Set up ground poles to trot/lope over.

Just last night I worked up upward and downward transitions based on my body language. Little tricky because your timing is critical but it was nice to work on something else.

You could work on riding bridleless.

I love these kinds of posts! I love a round pen and, I love working in one! When I had mine... in the process of building another, due to moving... yada, yada, yada... I did all kinds of stuff and, I put even my broke horses in there, quite a bit. I would work on all kinds of things - joining up(well, because I like my horses to respect me and want to be with me)... working with a surcingle and side reins. Working on upward and downward transitions using body language or vocal ques, biting up and making them 'chase their tail' per se. I also set up ground poles and cavelleti some. And, sometimes... I work on scary stuff. You know, exposing them to alls kinds of funky stuff - pool noodles, tarps, balls, bells, cans, whatever is scary that day. I really like to do lots of different things and keep it versatile. I don't like to get bored... so, I know good and well they don't, either. Or, you could work on riding bridleless. Or, if you aren't real good at riding bareback, nows your chance!
