Location: Jersey Girl | Silly question but.......once a horse has the foundation needed....to start one on the pattern do you just start walking the pattern then just progress to faster gaits?
Are there any good videos or books out? And yes this will be happening with the guidance of a trainer. I'm just trying to gain some knowledge first.

| Martha Josey has a new book out that is mostly drills but is very good and she has several videos that are really good. You need the drills to help get your turns etc down perfect. Also, I bought a book by Heather very that is very good--all drills. A good clinic is also very helpful. |

| I learned a lot from the Sharon Camarillo book growing up.
But yes, I usually walk and trot a pattern for a couple weeks every few days, I don't like to drill it into them right away. Once I get it down at walk and trot and their supple, I will start asking for a lope. Usually still breaking into a trot between barrels and then eventually lope through it. All depends on the horse. |

| At the trot and at the end of your ride, they seem to pay attention better at the trot and after a workout they aren't fresh. |

Location: Loco,Ok | The barrel is the last thing a horse sees here. It's a place of rest at first. I work cattle ,start on a flag. They have a job. Barrels are in pasture. I get here that been drilled to death. To many hate them. Been worked patterned drilled to death. Make it fun a place to rest at beginning. |

I agree. I try to never let mine get out of breath anywhere near a barrel. I don't make it work for them, I try to keep it fun and light. They seem to progress more quickly with way less work on my part. |

Same here, I start at a trot and at the end of a ride. Half halt where I want the rate point to be and then ask them to turn around my leg--they have already mastered those skills, so I'm just teaching them where to put their feet through repetition. They do what I ask, they get to quit for the day, so a lot of times we only go through once. |
