let me list the symptoms I am seeing in my horse: head shaking, teeth grinding, TMJ and a bleeder.

I've had dental done but am wondering if there is something going on in her ear.  Is this something that can be scoped? Teeth/jaw X-rays seem like a worth while investment? Are there any vets that specialize in head/neck?  Thanks. I'm just trying to find the best path to go down.  Love this gritty little mare and want to fix this head/ear issue. She seems irritated by it and I think it's not helping her bleeding.

thank you!

Years ago my mare developed a violent head shake.  It seemed it was out of her control and she seemed a bit dazed afterwards.  Long story very short:  took her to A&M and took spine and head x ray.  Found impaction in both ears, put her under and stuck a scope in her ears.  Both ears were jam packed with deer ticks.  Every time one moved or reattached she would feel it of course.
craziest thing.  She is a gray horse and was my only one at the time,  she was very well take care off.  Never saw a tick anywhere on her.

How do they remove them? Is it surgery??

IF they are way down there deep, it will take a vet to clean the ear out.

During the summer we dr their ears with campho phenique and baby oil to kill them and help heal their ears - the ticks will make them sore to where it is hard to bridle them.  the campho heals the ear, the baby oil suffocates the ticks.

if not cleaned out  it will begin to affect their equilibrium and make them sick.  This is from personnel experience.

My guy had ticks, would  not let you touch his ear.   Vet sedated him, found the ticks.  He gave him a shot of ivermectin to kill them.   He does not like to try and manually remove them, he is afraid if you can't completely get the head out it could abscess and cause more problems.   A couple of days after the shot he was back to normal.

I bought a mare years ago and when I got her home I noticed there were ticks in her ears the more I looked I saw how packed they were down in her ears, tolded my vet he came to see her and tolded me what to do for her. I wont say it here because you need your vet to look at this horse, with what you listed of the symptoms of your horse you really need to get it to the vet as soon as possible and tell him/her what you tolded us. The longer you wait the worst its going to be for this horse.

i found this peice of information. Anyone have any experieince with this?

Potential Ear Problems
Problems in the guttural pouches can unfortunately also migrate to the middle ear. "A middle ear infection can be the result of bacterial or fungal infections that come from the bloodstream or from the guttural pouch," says Sargent. "Unlike other species, when a horse gets a middle ear infection, it often migrates ventrally (downward). Then, instead of rupturing the eardrum and draining into the external ear canal, it causes inflammation of the tympanic bulla, which houses the middle ear, as well as the stylohyoid bone (part of the skull). Because this inflammation causes excessive bone formation, it results in fusion of the temporohyoid joint where the stylohyoid bone and temporal bone meet."
Fusion of this joint can lead to stress fractures in the petrous temporal or stylohyoid bones of the skull, which can in turn cause neurological problems. If this occurs, Sargent says the horse might exhibit ear rubbing, head tossing, and chomping movements, and he might have pain when the base of the ear is palpated. A severely affected horse will be depressed, keep his head tilted, walk in circles, and appear dizzy. The nerves of the face might also be paralyzed, resulting in drooping ears and lips, drooling, and an inability to blink.

They put her under and with help of the scope picked the ticks out one by one.  One vile full of fat ticks per ear.  Crazy!!!!

Anyone ever have a horse break/crack a tooth? With her constant grinding, I'm not ruling teeth out, either.  I'm working to get her in and have all avenues covered but this popped up in my researching.

We bought a horse that had a head trick was told he had ticks in his ears! He was so bad we had to break the bridle down and it was still a fight to get bridle on! Talked to vet he gave us some wormer to pour in his ears! Still bad! Took him to vet and his poll was out! Now when he starts to resist we take him and have him adjusted and he is just fine!

Eeeeeeeeeeeewwwwwwwwwwww!!!!!

Ticks are my kryptonite.

I agree, could be ticks, could be a cracked or impacted tooth, could be a guttural pouch or other issue like that - I've heard of all of them except ticks until now...now I'm not sure I can sleep...in any case, a visit to a good vet to get looked at is in order.

This might be a dumb question, but can they have ticks in their ears in the winter...in places where it gets very cold?

I agree with everyone here. Yes they can have them in winter bc they live and reproduce in there. YUCK! We have a big problem with them at racehorse farm. I have a aloe/pryrethrin gel I got at feed store I treat regularly. My babies get them the worst FUN, not.
Vets have a tiny camera they can stick down in the ear and look for them. Somettthey develop infection and need antibiotics

Please do, I feel like I have to know if it's ticks or not now! I went my whole life not knowing that nasty ticks could jam pack their self's in a horse's ear and now I can' t stop picturing it! Gross.

On day one we ruled out Tmj, teeth, ears, nasal, guttural pouches and neck issues.  Tomorrow we scope for ulcers. If nothing there, then a full lameness. Her lungs, ears, guttural pouches, films all showed perfect.  I think I'm gonna need a second job!  ??
