Expert Posts: 1586 Location: west of East Texas	What would you put on an old wound. A pasture ornament horse got a cut on the back leg, about 1/2 way between the hock and the ankle. The horse doesn't get looked at very often and the wound was old when they started doctoring it. It's been a couple months of haphazard care and the horse will not be taken to the vet. I want to start getting it healed. It is now an open sore and is about the size of a golf ball cut in half. ?It is just so ugly and old. I want to put something on it but I'm not sure about an old wound like this. Horse isn't showing any lameness. What suggestions do you have?

I just read the headlines Posts: 4483	Pink lady. I get it at the feed store. A vet we used always used it. It is swabbed on and makes a scab that keeps the flies off and the wound will heal quickly. It looks like Peptobismal.

Ms. Marine Posts: 4641 Location: Texas	If you're really worried about it you can throw some wonder dust on there.. It's a powder. I always make it into a paste with water or saliva, whichever one I have access to and put it on wounds. When it's dry it keeps flies and debris out of the wound.

Expert Posts: 3815 Location: The best kept secret in TX	For horses turned out I usually wash the wound extremely well with a light pressure water hose. Hose off the infection but not the new tissue if any is forming. I spray with Alu-Shield after it has air dried and then turn loose. I repeat this process every day to insure it's cleanliness.

We used to get a product that was similar, its called Derby Wound Lotion and was invented by a vet off the track, a Dr. Heiber out here in CA. When you looked at the ingredients it seemed like it shouldn't be anything special but man oh man did it do an unbelievable job!!! Not sure what happened, have tried to place an order with them, the phone number still works but no return call which is very unusual. I think I had heard the kids wanted to get rid of the business after Dr. Heiber had passed away but the wife had continued to keep it running. I have 1 last bottle of that stuff and I don't want to open it!!
