Has anyone dealt with a horse diagnosed with interstitial Pneumonia or interstitial lung disease? What was the cause, symptoms, diagnosis and treatment? What is the prognosis for your case? Thanks!

I do know that it is very difficult to treat.. my horse had similair prognosis hers was alveolar stenosis. Very costly as well. There is a doc at ks univ that did some research who we consulted with sadly we lost her. Not sure your exact prognosis but mine was not good

There's a variety of causes. Some bacterial, fungal, or viral. The symptoms of pneumonia include fever, tachypnea (increased resp rate) increased respiratory effort, respiratory distress, nasal discharge, increased sounds on auscultation like crackles and wheezes, colic symptoms, etc.. they don't have to have all the signs but they should have some of them.

diagnosis would be based on analysis of a fluid sample if you can get one, thoracic ultrasound, and if they are small enough, thoracic radiographs. You will see distinctive changes on the imaging modalities that lead you to suspect theres fluid (be it pus, blood, tumor, etc) in the chest.

treatment depends on the underlying cause but commonly they will get antibiotics, oxygen, pain management, and usually require hospitalization.

prognosis also varies on how early its caught, the underlying cause, and how aggressive the owner can be with treatment.
