I have a two year old I purchased that is paving fence line. She has a horse in the paddock next to her and putting a horse with her isn't an option.

I have a 12 year old mare. Done it her whole life. Mine does it when she has friends next to her or alone. Doesn't matter. She will even run her top teeth along the rail sometimes to! Then she will stop and go eat and drink like not a care in the world. It used to bother me but she keeps herself in awesome shape!! If I don't have time to ride then I know she is exercised. Lol she is a finished super nice 1d horse so I just let it go.

If another horse isn't an option is a friend like a mini donk or a goat?

Honestly don't have any other suggestions aside from perhaps training her to hobbles. I guess as a 2 year old I would be a little worried about damage to growing joints, ulcers etc.

Mom has a gelding that does it. Bought him as a 2yr old and he wore a track in front of the fence line he paced at. He had 2-3 other horses in with him at all times. He is now about to be 7 yrs old and STILL does it. Not as bad but he still does it. He has always been pastured with other horses, when he was in a stall for training it was even worse. We tried every single suggestion and treated for ulcers and nothing changed it.

ETA He also usually always has a round bale.

Call us crazy but we have one that will do that if he has to stay up and his best buddy isn't just right next to him. We put panels up along hte fence so he has to go around them. Doesn't make him stop but sure slowed him down.

Seriously, I can't tell you how many horses I've had come here that are chronic fence walkers. 90% of them quiet down quickly when treated for ulcers. Usually 3-5 days they're mildly better and within 10-14 days they're happy and quiet.

Treat for ulcers, get her a roundbale. Then if that doesn't help, train her to hobbles.

After several cups of coffee, the ole brain went to working and I made a plan based on some of your suggestions. I placed a number of tires throughout the paddock. I move them around every day so they are never in exact same spot. For the moment it's WORKING!!!!

I was going to suggest tires! It has stopped a few horses that paced fences and a few that weaved in the stall. Some outsmart it, and some do not. Glad its working for now!

Just an FYI, I treated for ulcers, worked GREAT - FOR AWHILE, then went right back at it. Treated again and nothing. She keeps herself in great shape but it drives ME crazy.
