| Someone please remind me, is it all ivermectin based dewormers that cause issues with herding dogs? I'm looking at spring vaccs and dewormers and can't remember exactly which I need to consider using with a heeler and two border collies that like to sneak manure from the pens.
What brands do you safely use with these dogs around your barn?

Nemex for the dogs or horses? I was thinking we'd be safe if I rotate safeguard and strongid. |

| Yup all ivermectin. I about killed my aussie with some he must have found on the ground. He was blind for about a week. It makes you sick to know you poisoned your own dog. |

Location: Montana | I'm getting a new aussie pup, and this is a concern for me. Will keeping him away from the barn and the horse poo for a couple weeks after worming be long enough to not have to worry about poisoning him? |

| You can have your dogs tested for MDR1 to see if they will have an issue with Ivermec. Untested dogs especially ones with border collie in them should never be given any. |

What I have been told is even MDR1 negative dogs can have a reaction, so it's best to treat all dogs in susceptible breeds as if they are positive. Genetics are more complicated than we currently understand. |

| What was preached to me was if they had a white collar and/or white paws no ivermectin. That said there is an exception, the amount of ivermectin in Heartgard won't hurt them. |

I have given my heeler heartgard for years.

Location: Running my kids somewhere. | It can effect any of the herding breeds. Aussies, Collies, etc. I will not give mine Heartguard. All of mine are tested but I don't chance it anyway. |

| I give my two Aussies and our Anatolian shepherd mix Trifexis monthly. Kills all worms except tapes I think? Also a flea preventative. Works great. Heart worm negative for 4 yrs. They've been on it since they were pups. |

Location: Mountains of VA | I have been deworming BCs with Ivomec for 30+ years and have never had a problem. We always use the Cattle/Pig injectable but give it orally. Just like with any medication, watch the dosage amount, that is where people get into trouble by giving too much ivomec. |

I'm like Hotpaints I always used Ivermectin on my border collies, Kelpies....well any of my dogs to include my Rat Terriers. I would not advocate anyone use it but it did work for me. I was careful with my doses ... used the cattle wormer in the brown box and always added some water to it. |
