Common sense is very much lacking these days. Last summer we were parked next to a lady with a toddler. I looked over and the little girl was standing by her mom's horses back leg patting her on the leg. If the horse would have kicked it would have gotten her right in the face. The mother was at the rear of the trailer getting her tack out. I very politely said Ma'am your little one is making me a bit nervous behind your horse like that. The mother comes around, looks at her and says, oh she don't mind. She wouldn't hurt her. I was just speechless! I couldn't believe that someone could be so ignorant.

I know it says team roper etiquette but it could easily apply to us barrel racers. Very good read!

I went to a barrel race over the weekend. They have an outside warm up pen with barrels set up. I had to make a horse change last minute and decided to take a horse that hadn't seen a barrel in 4 months. So needless to say, we had a little refersher course. Anyway, during the entire time I was working my horse (about 20 minutes worth) there were three young girls on horses who used that time to race each other back and forth down the pen. While I will say they that never actually entered my personal bubble, their parents should not have allowed them to do that in the practice area. They are just lucky horse I was riding was the even tempered one and rarely gets flustered. If I had been on my other mare, I probably would have nicely asked them to leave. There were some close open fields they could have easily taken their fun to. I know these were just kids but some barrel horses are so fragile minded. Parents have to understand they cant just let their kids run wild at barrel races.
Why are people so afraid to tell a child/kid to stop doing what they are doing? I am not!! If they are making noise in the grandstand running up and down, yup, I am going to go up to them and tell them that they can't do that anymore,( i have done this on more than one occasion) if there is a child/kid in the warm up pen with NO manners, yup, I am going to say something to them!! I am not afraid of their parents either, bring them on!! I don't understand why everyone stays quiet?? Good grief!!

Because when you do tell the kids who are acting this way - you areΒ setting yourself up for a huge mess.Β  I actually had a 19 year old girl walk in front of me while entering the arena.Β  Needless to say it didn't turn out pleasant.Β  When I finished my run I told the girl what she did was rude, but more importantly that she could have hurt us all.Β  Her reply - "I didnt bother you".Β  Then he father proceeded to goose my horse, knock me to the ground and my horse walked all over me.Β  Of course, my husband came over.Β  Her father actually hit my husband and he had 9 stitches.Β Β Then they actually had the nerve to call the cops.Β  People are asses and self centered.Β  They don't give a crap about anyone.Β  Warm up arenas have become a total crap house and no one cares.Β

This is INSANE to me. I guess it's not just the little kiddos who need a lesson in warm up/race etiquette!

What scares me is at the weekend long races the kids who have finished their runs and decide to go get their horse and ride bareback in the middle of the Open division warm up pen without supervision and try to practice the barrels.

I'm a parent and there is no way I'd let my child do that. The warm up pen is busy enough with people actually getting ready to run never mind having extra horses is there that obviously don't need to be there.

I don't mind people having leashed dogs at events and tying them to trailers when they're at the trailer but PUT THEM IN THE TRAILER when you're not around. At some events where parking is tight and access is limited getting horses from the ring back to a trailer is painful enough never mind walking your horse past the parking areas and some dog comes flying out from under the trailer barking and snarling at you because you're within 40 feet of their trailer. Ugh

I am almost certain I was at the same race over the weekend. Great race but the parking and some of the people made it rough. People were parking in the 'electric' RV park running a generator...when there were NO spots to park anymore, they were all reserved. They didn't pay for a spot, they didn't pay to hook up, they just wanted to park closer to the barns. Well there is a NICE lot of to the side of the barns just for that reason. Yes, they were made to move as they should have been. The parking around the barns and in between the barns was the worst I have ever seen. Huge trailers parked in between the barns and ALMOST blocking off stall entryways, then had the audacity to bring their horses out and tie to the trailer, while running their generators. I wish they would have been asked to move. They did this just so they could be closer to their barn. Ridiculous!!!!!  They should have pre-entered and requested where they wanted to be. The producers were more than accomadating! We almost didn't make it out becasue people parking and unhooking right at the corners of the driveway to the barns. :(

It isn't just barrel races, I went ot an APHA show and paid for a hookup. There was a narrow road coming into the facility and that was the way out. Some idiot with a HUGE rig was parked almost in the middle with his side load ramp down. I entered the first class I could get in and was ready to make my 4 hour drive home. I could not get out. I went to the office and complained and they knew exactly who it was and said he was probably in the trailer asleep. I was about to get in the truck to see if the keys were in it to move it when a couple of ladies said they would move so I could get around the idiot.

I so relate and agree with you on all of that. I have seen it all and I am a gemini and it bugs me to no end. Or when there is PLENTY of room to park . Like million acres and they park 2' from your trailer and give you that death look when you ask them to move over a little.

Or, when you're like me and you haul two cycling mares or a stud and you park way out in Timbuktu to be AWAY from everyone else, and then you step out of your trailer to find someone so close to you that your horses are kicking at each other and then the person who showed up AFTER YOU says "do you know your horse kicks?" Or better yet, "OMG IS THAT A *STALLION???* I would have never known, but OMG, that's a STALLION, right?"

My reply to these folks: Yes...this is why I am ALL THE WAY over here where I WAS away from everyone. Until YOU showed up.

(And the stallion comment no longer applies as he has since been gelded.)

My dogs have always gone with me, but if I am not right there at the trailer, they are in the LQ.  If one pooped, it got cleaned up.  If we were out & about, they were on leashes.  Used to irritate the he!! out of me that a particular woman used to let her Heeler run loose all the time - no leash, always claimed "he's always right w/me" - um - no - he's over here and there, etc - peeing on everything, pooping next to someone's truck or LQ door, teasing other (quiet, well mannered) dogs, generally being nothing but a PITA.  But she's a know it all so it's all good.  I don't have a lot of patience for ill behaved kids or dogs ... and especially for their adults that don't care how much danger they put others in, create problems, etc.

Went to a local race over the weekend. No dogs allowed in arena while competition was goin on, on a leash before hand, basic rules. A girl was getting ready to run, when her dog walks in the side door. Someone said "Oh, that's _____'s dog. It pretty much does whatever it wants." REALLY?!?!?!?! It had a collar on and nothing else. Didn't get loose, owner said well, he usually stays at the truck so I didn't tie him or put him up. It went around a visited almost a whole row of trucks and trailers, hanging out, peeing on tires, etc for quite a while AFTER the owner had run.
We have our dogs at the race. They may be off of a leash when we are sitting right outside the trailer and they don't go anywhere. The minute we leave they are put inside, or on a leash to go for a walk. It's owners above that give the responsible owner's a bad name.

Then, in the warm up area. You were either going one way or the other. 2 amazing circles of people actually respecting each other, it was a nice change from an insane warm up area....except for ONE woman, "loping" (actually way faster than a lope but less than a full out run) in a large circle to the left, right in the middle of the two circles. She ALMOST broad sided a girl and myself walking/trotting a couple of times. She just kept going and smiling big! No apologies, no slow down, and no one said anything to her. I just don't understand.

A friend of mine is putting barrel races at her beautiful facility. The races are getting bigger and bigger so you guys can imagine what the open arena looks like with all the riders competing trying to warm up. We are trying to come up with ideas how to make it still available but safer. We were even thinking of splitting the contestants in two groups and allowing each group a few minutes at a time... .or after a certain number of riders in the arena, closing the gate??? the facility is fairly new and unfortunately they don't have the warm up pen build yet but they will have it at some point. Once they have it done, I am sure it will alleviate the craziness of the open arenas.

I take my dogs everywhere with me (as I posted earlier) but they are both on a leash at all times. One of the races that we attend quite often they have "dog races" as well. Love it!!!!
