Right here you just answered your own question. Your trainer can get her into the 1D, yet you can't. Whether it is your confidence, your riding style, your preparation, or the combination or your riding style and her running style...

You also mentioned you can't ride during the winter..as with anything we do, our bodies won't be as fit and our muscle memory isn't sharp when we don't use them. If your horse isn't ridden during the winter either, she will need some legging up and muscle memory refreshing herself. Make sure she isn't sore and is in top condition.

I read this on here so often, and seldom comment, but you seem to have figured out where to start...with yourself - kudos to you for recognizing that! There is no magic wand (or everyone would be on a 1D horse). Do all you can for her to be in optimum condition, then find your heart and your fire...make yourself into a 1D rider. Sounds like your mare is already there. And just like not all horses can be 1D horses, not all riders can be 1D riders. Challenge YOURSELF, push YOURSELF.

Hats off to all who responded with POSITIVE comments.  I'm proud of you!  Maybe it was in the way the poster asked the question or explained the situation.  I've seen others ask the same and get alot of responses that you can't make a horse faster, they are what they are.  This thread is living proof that there are THINGS you can do to improve not just the horse but yourself.

Good luck to you! I am a work in progress too.  The jockey needs fixing, lol

thank you all for the replies! very helpful! I know I have some work to do on myself. I'd love a critique of one of my runs so when I get one (hopefully this coming weekend) I will post.

I think the horses are so much better than they used to be such amazing athletes race horses anymore when I was in the 1 d I kept my weight down and my horse was well fed excercised and no negativity did I let creep in my brain.

I've sat on a few 1D horses, but I am truly not yet a 1D rider, I'm proud to ride the top of 3D and sometimes hit the 2D as well and I'm talking big Florida competition, but I can honestly say I'm not working hard enough on myself to be a 1D rider yet. It's a goal and it may take a few more years and the right horse but I will get there. I also started out as queen of the 4D. Set goals for yourself but understand realistic expectations for you and your horse.

It takes a special horse with a big heart to be a true 1D horse. And a talented jockey fast enough and strong enough to keep up with them.

It also depends on your demographics, Florida is a hard state and especially my area we run against several nbha world champions and rodeo girls, so being a second or faster off is a huge accomplishment for people!
