Make sure your horse is on the correct lead coming in and that will neaten up that first barrel. Make sure that the horse can pick up the correct lead when you kick him. I would evaluate hi shoeing because it look like he is paddling pretty bad coming in the alley.

That's interesting that you said that about the paddling, I noticed it too, but I don't think he's ever traveled like that before.  I will definitely ask my farrier about it. Thank you!

You need to slo mo this video and go frame by frame. First is costing you a lot of time. For this particular pen, I'd hug that left side of the alley. The short run and how far it is over to first is causing you to have way too big of a pocket and that, in turn, is causing you to slice first. That's why he's going past, coming to a point and then basically rolling back. If you slow it down, he starts to set up his turn before the barrel is even in the frame. You need to be a little further past the entry/top of first. 2' would help you a lot to round the turn instead of losing your momentum and slicing.

On second, he starts to set for the turn about 2 strides before the barrel. I'd drive him straighter for longer before letting him start the turn. Ride him two handed until his shoulder gets to the barrel. Where you go to the horn is where he starts to turn.

I did not see your other thread so excuse me if I ask things that have already been asked.

What bit are you using?
When have his teeth been done last?

Overal, I see him resisting you somewhat with his mouth. He's not soft.

It doesn't necessarily concern me that he was on the wrong lead coming down the alley. He seems far enough along that he knows what's going on and he'll switch and take care of it. But what DOES concern me is him flipping his nose trying to get away from your contact as you come down the alley and approach your first barrel.

He seems really "noodley" on your first barrel. His neck is bent around but his hindquarters aren't getting down and in the dirt (moreso swinging them around). As you come into your turn, I see your left elbow go WAY UP and back. I think you need to learn to be more subtle with your direct rein and "lift" more than pull back. That will also help teach him to engage his butt, and not swing it around.

Your second barrel wasn't too bad at all. He used his butt better. You just got a little bit hung up leaving the barrel. Can't quite tell if it was you, your hand, or him, or what exactly happened.

....The video is grainy .... did you switch hands back and forth on the way to your 3rd barrel???

I think your reins are too long. Especially on your 3rd barrel, you've just about got your hand at your hip. Again, I think you might be thinking "pulling back" too much, when you could instead think "help and lift and guide". Use your seat and legs, more than anything.

You maybe turned the 3rd barrel just a smidge too soon. And that's why he had to step off and arc a little when you left the barrel, instead of powering for home.

Overall, not a bad run by any means. I'm getting nitpicky.
I like your horse. Just a few fine tuning things and you'll be rocking it.

Thank you so much!  You hit the nail on the head with everything I've been trying to fix.  He is set up to have his teeth worked on. He does resist me a lot and I've tried SOOO many bits and hackamores on him.  I've always had to watch the way I ride him because he is more of a noodle type horse.  I'm running him tonight and will use my josey go round bit to stiffen him up.

Sometimes he pops up leaving the second and sometimes I can keep him going.  I think it's all in my hands on that one.

I did go two handed to the third barrel.

Lol, and I've been wondering if my reins are too long!!

Thank you so much!! I've struggled with the apporach in this pen because it's so off centered from the alley for the ones that go to the left barrel first!!

I try really hard to push him past the second but he's leaning on me so bad that I hold him off as long as I can.  I've been really trying to work on that in my slow work!

I would say the biggest thing I noticed is he tends to bend his head around to the inside on the backside of the barrel which causes you to lose forward motion. You are pulling to what looks like your jean pocket to get him to finish the turn. I wonder if you "led" a little more vs pulling back, he might snap around more efficiently.

I see you riding with reins way too much.  I saw a good sit at second, but didn't see much of anything at first and 3rd wasn't real good.  Use your weight and legs vs. your hands to cue him to slow down and collect going into the barrels.
