So I have always just vaccinated my horses 1 time a year with a 5 way, west nile and rabies. But recently I was talking to some people who vaccinate twice a year. I was just wondering how many of you vaccinate once or twice a year? Also, my new filly that I got a couple weeks ago...she was totally un handled, but the owner stated that she did have her 5 way in January...? So, I'm not totally sure if she actually received it or not. Would it be ok for me to vaccinate her again? I don't want to over do it with her on the vaccine, but I also have a feeling that she actually didn't get done =/ Thanks!!

Have you ever wondered why humans get vaccinated as children and with the exception of tetanus, never get vaccinated ever again??? Human and Horse immune systems function in much the same way, so why is it humans don't get vaccinated annually????? I vaccinate my horses if I don't know their history and annually until they are 3. I give an annual tetanus and westnile only after that. My vet also agrees with this protocol but fully admits she makes a LOTTTTTTTT of money vaccinating all her clients horses annually. Makes you wonder.

We've always vaccinated annually, especially for tetanus and west nile.

I only vaccinate once a year as well. Not sure why someone would do it twice a year?

There's "core" vaccines (Tetanus, EEE/WEE, West Nile, Rabies), and then there's "risk based" vaccines (these are dependent upon region where you live, if the horse travels to public areas with other horses, etc....)

In adult horses, core vaccine protocol is annual but, some of the risk based vaccines are more frequent.

There's a lot to it vs just saying "I vaccinate twice per year", ok, for what?

And, depending on which vaccine manufacturer you use, some do offer programs that give up to a specified dollar amount toward treatment if your horse does contract something within a specified period of time from vaccination. Proof of vaccination through a vet with traceable lot numbers and such is required.

I vaccinate annually with rabies only. My horse had a reaction to a 5 way that left him with Epm symptoms. It has taken 2 years rehabing him. May try a west miles this year but not doing combo doses anymore.

If the 5 way is the only one she ever had, she needs a booster anyway so it wouldn't hurt to booster it. No reason to vaccinate twice a year except may rhino and flu if you are hauling a lot.
