My 7 year old Golden Retriever has the worst breath. It smells like he ate something dead (even though I am positive he didn't..). He goes to the doggy dentist every 6 months and his tooth health is on par. But I need suggestions to help his breath - my husband and I can't take it anymore. We don't let him near us because it's so bad.

Suggestions? Something other than those greenies things because my vet said those are absolutely horrible for your dog and can cause huge digestion issues and splinters.

Sometimes a dog with bad breath is because of a blocked anal gland. The vet can take care of this for you. Hope it helps

My dog had horrid breath and vet kept telling me to brush his teeth, but yeah, that never happened on a regular basis. A few years later, after missing lots of signs, he was diagnosed with Diabetes and put on Insulin. When we got his sugar under control, he bad breath disappeared. Not saying that this is the only cause, just one option to check out.

I'd look at what you're feeding him and then go from there... poor quality food can cause bad breath, but is more often caused by a health issue in general. I would have a wellness check done by a vet you don't normally go to so that it's a fresh pair of eyes looking your dog over. If everything checks out good, you can purchase breath freshener that pours into his water and it will help quite a bit also.

ok! bad dog parent here! lol I have a toy aussie that had extremely bad breath, I tried all the greenie things, dog mints nothing worked so I just smelled his stinky breath! Well I took him to the vet a couple of weeks ago because he was loosing weight - guess what - bad teeth - they blasted them (cleaned them) and he has wonderful breath now! if he had been younger it would have cost around $40 but he is about 11 years old so they did blood work to make sure nothing else was going on and that cost was crazy!

We have an Am Staff that has terrible breath. She is fed high quality dog food, has her teeth cleaned when needed and has had extensive blood work. I brush her teeth every day and then use this product:

We feed him Natural Balance Limited Ingredient Diet dog food - which is the only kind that keeps his allergies at bay. He does not get any 'people' food besides about a tablespoon of coconut oil once a day to help with his coat.
