I've searched and searched on here. This is my problem... I have a mare that definitely has ulcers. I'm treating her now with OE solution. I feed her triple crown sr( bc its low in sugar/starch) and alfalfa. I keep reading get rid of the grain but then will she not loose weight? She is super picky with the alfalfa already so I know she won't eat much of it.

I work for a vet and we are trying a product called Relyne GI from Hagyard Pharmacy in Kentucky. It is supposed to be pretty amazing with healing ulcers and you don't have to have a prescription to order it. It is a liquid and way cheaper that Gastro Gard. Might be worth a try!

This is just a thought - she may pick up weight better after you take the feed away and give the ulcers a chance to heal. Here is my thought process - (and believe me, I know I may be wrong)- the grains may be keeping the stomach/digestive system inflammed and not allowing the tissues to heal, so there won't be any weight gain. If hay is more soothing to the digestive system and you are treating for ulcers, the hay may allow the horse to heal.
This is what I have done for my horses that have had ulcers - treat for ulcers and take them off grain, feeding alfalfa cubes, renew gold, flaxseed and free choice grass hay because I have no pasture. Also, I feed a calming supplement in case they are stressing silently and loose Redmond minerals.
If I were you I would contact WinWillows on here as he has been in the feed industry for many years and is very involved with Renew Gold. He is really nice and if you search on here you will find his phone number.
Let us know what you come up with that helps your horse.

The only way my mare gained weight and stop acting ulcery was switching her from grain (Strategy Healthy Edge and then Ultium) to beet pulp and alfalfa pellets. I changed her feed, treated her 30 days with omeprazole and right when she finished that started her on SmartGut Ultra. Haven't had a problem since. Prior to switching feed I would treat her and she would be fine for a month or two and then act ulcery again.

No processed grain, up her roughage for more calories.  Molasses free beet pulp is an alternative.  Her picky eating/hard keeper status may change once the ulcers are cured.   You can also add a concentrated feed like Progressive-they only get a cup or 2 a day and get all the vitamins and minerals.

Is she grazing constantly, or have hay in front of her at all times? Horses need to chew to produce saliva, which acts as a buffer. How many pounds of TC Sr is she getting?

How do you know she "definitely" has ulcers? I just had a mare that went off our alfalfa because she had a sore mouth. I offered her grass hay and she inhaled it. Just trying to think outside the box for you.

I would try GastroPlus from THE or Succeed, you can syringe it in her mouth at first so she gets it even if she is picky.  Alfalfa cubes may be easier for her to digest than alfalfa hay right now.  Not to knock the OE products, but the two I mentioned above have never let me down. One or the other always works, omeprazole is great also but I have had a few over the years that have not done well at all on it.  I also like Adapt and Calm by Curost or TheraCalm from Biostar if she is a worrier, seems like most hard keepers are.

She had kissing spine surgery in November... so she was in a stall for a MONTH!! She started dropping weight and sometimes won't finish her feed. She only gets nervous away from home. All my horses are turned out 24/7 so she always has something to eat on

Forco is a prebiotic/probiotic. Omeprezole, alfalfa, rose hips, beet pulp without molasses and black licorice. It takes 3 months to turn a horse around that has ulcers.

I agree with taking her off of all processed grains, especially those with molasses. My mare has HYPP and is ulcer prone. Due to the HYPP, she can't have very much alfalfa, so I put her on ADM HealthyGlo (a fat/mineral supplement made with very "gentle" stabilized rice bran), whole oats, alfalfa pellets, and beet pulp. She's different horse. She's calmer and even easier to catch now that her stomach doesn't hurt all the time. Horses were made to eat "raw" foods and I can't believe the turn around she has made.

So is oats not a "grain"? And what is the difference between adm, renew gold, and empower boost? And I'm assuming u soak the beer pulp?

Yes, just plain beet pulp, and I soak the two together :)

FORCO is only a PRE-biotic, Not a probiotic. Just fyi as you are deciding on a strategy. I keep all my horses, and especially those ulcer prone cases on TC senior. It it ALFALFA and BEET PULP based and a COMPLETE feed. SO really it can be fed to horses as their total diet. Its very easy on their system, extremely low sugar and NSC at 11%. Its ROUGHAGE based. Yes, it has a " Little" molasses but not enough to really have a negative effect if fed as PART of a total diet.
