Currently setting up a round pen and will be hauling sand in for footing and looking for some type of barrier around the bottom to keep the sand in. I was thinking a 1x12 board would work, but husband thinks that is too thin and would break easily. Any suggestions on what to use?

I agree, the weight of the sand would be too much for that. We used heavy railroad ties for ours.

I have used rough cut bridge planks, and they've worked well.  Mine are treated in kreosote so they dont rot.  They are like 2.5" X 12"

Are they on the outside of the panels?

We dug ours out like a bowl. Then added sand.

I have rubber conveyor belt about 2 foot tall lining mine. Holds sand in well.
