| Have anyone dealt with a deep flexor tendon tear? What was the treatment. What was the rehabilitation time? What is the expected outcome for their future? IF all things go well....can they be ridden.
What was the treatment that worked for you?
Thank you for all replies.

Location: Texas | Depends on how bad, and only an MRI can TRULY tell you that. I had one that tore it so bad he had to be put down. I have another that has a lesion on her deep and gave her six months off and she will have a checkup beginning of year to see if its filled in and she can start going back to work. |

| This is my first go round with a deep flexor tendon tear.
I had been battling lameness issues since August.
However after much Vet expenses we had an MRI done a couple weeks ago that confirmed a deep flexor tendon tear.
Vet is giving us 50/50 chance of recovery. Our treatment is 6 months off in stall with small run and 10 minutes of hand walking daily. I am confident we will recover. Although I am thinking we may give him more time off to on the safe side.

Stem cells injected into the tear, less scar tissue |

| I agree I was given the option of stem cells but opted for stall rest.
I wish I could of afforded the stem cell injection.
The MRI was $2,500 and stem cell injection would of been an additional $3,000.

| Had a bad tear on ddft diagnosed via MRI. Was considered career ending by several top vets. Opted for stem cells and laser and followed rehab directions carefully. Recheck MRI at 6months showed almost complete healing with little to no scar tissue and 100 percent sound.
Did 4 months of strict box stall rest with hand walking then progressed very very slowly under saddle. vets recommended no barrel work until 1yr later

| Thanks for all the responses. I really appreciate it.
Just waiting to get an opinion on how the tendon is healing.
I am just hoping that we can once again be healed enough to out to ride. Not concerned about my mare barrel racing again. Just keeping fingers crossed with enough patience she will heal and get through this just to be ridden again.
Again. Thanks. |

Location: Texas | Get some Runners Relief! Wrap every night (12 hours on/12 hours off) for six days, leave off seventh day. This stuff is miraculous! Start with a clean dry leg, use a plastic glove and smear Runners Relief on the leg where the tear is, cover with plastic wrap and then a no bow wrap. |

Location: Northern CA | My cow horse, had 3 lesions/strains in his DDFT. We did stem cell and rehab for 8 months. He recovered 100%. We did stem cell in January, I was competing on him in October. DDFT injuries most often times occur because of foot issues. He is on a very strict 5 week schedule with Equilibrium shoes. That was 3 years ago, have had no issues with heavy showing, etc. Highly recommend stem cell, and even more strongly recommend a proven lameness vet. |

| I am in the same boat as you right now, this is totally new to me and I am a worry wart. My mare is going on day 50 since the initial injury. I have been wrapping daily and when unwrapped I seem to get tons of swelling. Are you still battling swelling? |

| I had a mare that was diagnosed with either a DDFT injury or Navicular (even though the digital xrays showed NO indication of navicular changes) by a top race track lameness vet. He told me that only an MRI would give me an answer. I called my regular (and very good but did not have a digital xray at the time) vet and discussed the situation. I asked if we could shockwave the DDFT and he said yes. She went sound after the first SW and remained sound in the DDFT (I did do the follow up treatment). I have NO idea how bad the injury was, but DID get results with the SW. Can't help but think that it would help any DDFT injury if not totally clearing up the problem. It is my understanding that the SW treatments help the tendon fibers to line up more correctly to heal better and with less scar tissue. I am in no way saying that it will be the only answer to OP's problem.
Good luck with whatever you do. |

My mare that has been off since August apparently is pretty close to healing in the initial spot that tore. New vet say it is the superior flexor tendon. Too closed to do any treatments with prp, shock wave or stem cell. Unfortunately, she is over in her knee now due to probable tear from location in distal in knee. Sorry, technical terms are over my head. Can try slow increase in exercise cause she really showed no lameness on exam even in round pen. Problem is she keeps it bent and shakes when finished not wanting to put weight on it.
This vet says in would be the same surgery they do on foals who are over in knee. Now I need options. Any way to get tendon to relax or stretch out?
Any one had to deal with this?
I do not care if I ever run barrels again on her. Just want to be able to trail ride now with her. I am not a breeder, even though she is bred pretty well (Pyron Six, out of Sail on Bunny x Easy Jet on papers). No pasture.
I am looking now to find a place that does this type of surgery and see my options. What to do.
Thanks for any advice. |

I have a horse out right now healing from a small flexor tendon tear. I've had her to 3 vets and all said 6 to 9 months of turn-out. No riding, just turn-out. Two of the 3 admitted the turn-outs (versus faster "treatment" methods) have less reocurrences due to extended healing time.
I've had two of these before and both horses returned to barrel racing with no reocurrences. Best of luck with your horse's healing!
