Bone Cysts

I am hoping to learn a little more about bone cysts and your experiences, what causes them, and if it more environmental factors or genetics that cause them. My heart horse was diagnosed with a bone cyst in her navicular bone at 10 years old. She was truly amazing athlete and I am still heartbroken. The vet said it would be thousands and she would probably never be the same so she is a retired pasture pet which is difficult since I board and it gets expensive. She has actually improved quite a bit over the last couple of years, you can't tell she is lame out in the pasture. I'm sure it would be different if she was riding, but it is nice to see her comfortable and happy. I'm thinking of finding her a new home where she could be a broodmare or used for light riding with a kid, but I want to hear your experiences and perspective. Thank you!

The girl I haul with just found one on her horse's navicular. They started Osphos, vet said he's had 100% success rate with it so far. Might be worth trying. Her mare has gone back to running/turning like she used to and it's been 4 weeks since the xray & Osphos

I just sold a 4 yr old mare as a broodmare because of 3 cysts in her stifle along wth a bone spur. I read that typically cycsts can be genetic but it is more of a developmental issue. I don't want to give incorrect info so I would suggest reading up on the causes. I was just as heartbroken as you are and am very sorry to hear that. Surgery, IRAP, Injections and Adaquan were my options, all with varying degrees of effectiveness but ultimately it is the soft tissue damage that made her sore and since it is degenerative it won't get better. I chose to sell her becasue she had never been entered and I was saving her for the 5 yr old futirities and I could not justify a $10k+ surgery and 8-10 months off. My mare was unsound in a small barrel type turn so I sold her to be a ranch horse/broodmare to a wonderful family in MT.
