a great documentary "Pet Fooled" about the pet food industry, how deceptive it is, how kibble is causing the many health problems our pets have.  They recommend  a raw diet.

I wonder what type of raw diet they are talking about?

Beware of shockumentaries.  I would take anything they presented with a grain of salt, as their whole purpose is to sensationalize and scare you silly by taking bits of truth and making it as horrifying as possible.   There have been many of these made about agriculture that leave those of us in Ag scratching our heads over how these people dreamed up downright crazy lies about what we do.

No doubt the pet food industry indulges in deceptive marketing, but I wouldn't buy into what this deal is selling either.

Amen to that........my dogs are the picture of health on Purina One dry and canned food and yet for some reason experts think I should be feeding them something that starts with "Blue".

This is a pretty straight up documentary, no alterior motive as to selling their  products, etc.  Along with the deceptive labeling they examined the many deaths caused by contaminated food and treats and how it is never going to change since there is no $$ put on pets in a court.   While some dogs to fine on kibble, those with hot spots, allergies, arthritis, yeast over load  etc might benefit from a change.  My lab used to get hot spots every summer, completely stopped when I took dry food away. Prior to that I had tried every grain free and limited ingredient option out there.

Does horse poop and dead things count as a raw diet?

Everything with a grain of salt and situation by situation, totally agree.

I couldn't agree more.

There are companies making the raw diets that you purchase in the stores and I get recall alerts all the time on them.

All dog food is not created equal. All of our dogs have lived beyond the average age. We feed a high quality kibble food and there is no way I would feed raw.

Meant to add that we stay with smaller family owned dog food manufacturers. They can't afford to buy crap ingredients as one recall would most likely but them out of business. It seems every good dog food company that has been bought out by the big companies suck...California Naturals and Blue are two of them. Once they got bought out recalls followed.

Lol, that was pretty much the point of the doc -look at your situation,  how your dog is doing.  The eating poop and dead things was actually an example given of how their systems are made to handle raw gross things :).

We all love our dogs. Some of us are more concerned with our dog's diet than we are with our own. I've always been a little leery of these grain-free "designer" brands with more exotic meats like bison, venison, or quail. What makes those meats so special? What the hell is so special about quail? Nothing of course....and that's why I'm leery.
On the other hand, we fed the usual cheap kibble, plus table scraps, growing up, and our dogs lived long, healthy lives. When I walk through these places like Petco I can't believe the brands and varieties available. I don't know what to think anymore.

What do you feed NTO?  And I agree with Scott's post too.

All my dogs that I have and had have all grown up on Purina Dog Chow and all my dogs in the past have lived well into their late teens and the farm dogs that I have now are in their mid teens and going strong..
