Could be either, check by making sure saddle is fitting right, pad is not to stiff and rubbing, cinch is ok, not over using spurs if you wear them. Then if all is good then start with a good vet.. |

| Β Vet said he is sound as an ox! Pretty sure saddle fits. I think it is allergy related. |

What about a chiro? I've never dealt with tail swishing from allergies or even heard of that. |

Location: Mountains of VA | Tail swishing/stiff tail in a youngster just starting to lope, stifles, especially if they are wanting to dump all their weight on the front end. Check for back soreness and all the usual stuff but stiff/catching stifles comes first in my mind. An older horse, hocks, stifles, back soreness, ulcers, etc. |

| I have two that do this and they have been chiroed, vetted, accupunctured, a different person running them with different equipment, dont use spurs (never have), I don't even kick hard......I think they use that swishing tail as their propeller. I hate it but it's their way of going |

| I have one that does it, he was ridden when he was sore before we got him and he was never adjusted or fixed so he got cold backed due to it and he is no longer sore but he still swishes his tail when we are first riding him. |

Location: Woodstown, NJ | I think they do it when something is bothering them. It may be a physical issue, it may be the equipment, it may be they don't like somebody on their back. Does he do it when he's running in the field loose? Does he do it when you're sending him around in the round pen, assuming you have one? Or on a lunge line with no rider? Any other time? I never heard of it being caused by allergies. If that is the case, he would be doing it at rest in his stall too, no? |

We have one like this too. She was super sore when we got her and would swish her tail for the first 30 seconds when you got on and started walking off. But, we've had her adjusted a few times, and just had a custom saddle made to fit her and it's eliminated 95% of the swishing. I'm hoping one day we get her comfortable and she forgets about being sore with the previous owner |

| I have a tail swisher, been vetted, chiro, treated for ulcers, you name it, still swishes when you kick no matter how lightly. |

Catching stifles, loose stifles, just general pain/problems with stifles will cause swishing tails/stiff tails, popping up but not really bucking, cross cantering. I usually notice stifle problems more in their 3yo year as they are going through a growth spurt.....I am riding one now and she is equally unconfortable on both sides, going straight she is much happier. She also wants to dump all her weight on front and root against the big. Got to keep driving them forward. I have decided to quit trying to lope her right now but I keep loping her doing groundwork.

| Β He mostly does it in a run. The vet described it to me like this. Imagine you having really painful sinus pressure and being asked to perform strenuous exercise. He also headshakes..allergy induced. So we think that it is from pain related but the pain is head/facial pain. |
