Location: IL | Anyone have an abscess so bad that part of the hoof wall just fell off? I noticed my mare limping this morning bad. I just rode her all weekend and no problems, did not feel off or sore. My husband put shoes on her a week ago and noticed an old abscess in her hind left outside heel area where you can see it popped through her heel bulb. He said it looked old and she didn't seem sore on it. He put shoes on and she was fine. This morning in her left hind foot, part of her outside wall from coranary band down to shoe is gone. I'm so upset right now. She's going to be out for the whole season. I have her wrapped with poutice pad and duck taped up in a stall. Anyone have this happen? How long did they take to get better?

| I would take that horse to the vet and get it evaluated. That doesn't look like a general abscess. I would agree with White Line Disease possibly.
Definitely need a vet though. |

Horse has seen the vet. It is not white line. We've had terrible wet weather. The abscess came out the heel bulb and traveled up to the coronary band. Must have done so much damage that it weakened the wall esp with all this wet weather. I was just wondering if anyone had one this bad and how long until it grew back out. |

Might not need to be out the whole season. Some corrective shoeing farriers can use a cast like material to fill in the gap as it grows out. I would look into that. THe material dries hard so its like real hoof and offers the support as well. I would start now by putting some UN-salted butter on the coronet band every day. It will grow a foot out fast. |

She is sore on it. She was really lame yesterday, but putting more weight on it today. I've never seen an abscess this bad. I'm totally crushed about this  |

Location: Opelousas, LA | Hard to tell, but that looks like a quarter crack. Pretty common with TB race horses,but I had a barrel horse get one and it was a bugger to fix. I had to have a vet/farrier put her in a heart bar and lace it, once it grew out with that set up I never had a problem again.
On the positive side, most times once you get it stabilized and the proper frog support to take the pressure off the heel, they get sound and you can put them back to work, carefully. Hind feet tend to be easier than fronts to heal up.

Location: Under The Big Sky Of Texas | My gelding did this on his front hoof right in the middle, he blew a abscess on his coranary band, I have him on a good hoof supplement and it really helped him grow his foot out faster, but he was never lame, he was a bit sore from grass founder at the time but not 3 legged lame. Give it time and a good hoof supplement and she should start growing out her hoof..But its going to take time.. And I wanted to add, I used my PHT Mag bell boots on him as his hooves were growing out and it helped so much for the healing and the blood flow.. The boots were to blame for the fast healing I think

Location: Where the pavement ends and the West begins Utah | It will take 6 months before you see results. Hoof looks to be way under slung which will be a big contribute on how long it takes to heal. Look up tab shoeing videos using equi pak. |

| I'm dealing with an old Crack right front center, that must have blown from her coronary band. Don't know the history but the hoof didn't grow properly, underslung heals, and chronic abcesses. After a great lameness vet and getting an awesome farrier she is now comfortable with a heart bar shoe, frog pads and the Crack laced up. They both say a year off. Most of this is due to the old Crack tho, as it was growing overlapping, not together |
