What is the best feed for keeping a horse level headed... I know some feeds have higher sugar levels etc... my mare is pretty calm but I switched her to strategy and she has been nuts lately... is ultium better? Omolene?

If she gets hot on Strategy, I would think she'd definitely get hot on Ultium and Omolene.

I feed Total Equine. It's expensive but my horses do really well on it, but with saying that I've seen some horses who've looked like crap on it.

I guess it depends on your horse and what you're looking to get out of a feed and what type/quality of forage you're feeding? OR is it really the feed or does the mare need more exercise or portion control?

I have a hot broncy mare. She was on Stradagy when I bought her. 14% is too much protein. I switched her to Nutrina 10 10 pellets. Way better.

Higher protein levels in general are not what causes the energy and lack of focus that you experienced. Those changes come from higher starch and sugar levels in the feed. Some grain based feeds that cause this may also be higher in protein, but the protein is not the base cause. The overall change can be even more complicated. I have had people tell me that adding alfalfa to the diet made their horses hot, and that it must be the higher protein in the alfalfa that caused this. Not so. When alfalfa is added to the diet it slows the hind gut some allowing for more complete digestion of the grass hay part of the diet. Some grass hays can be pretty high in sugar. When it becomes easier for the horse to digest that grass hay, the horse gets a larger percentage of the sugars in the grass hay and that may make some horses react. This is why there is not a real easy answer. Sugar levels in grass hays are all over the board, both by region and individual crop, and hard to judge without testing. Grain based feeds that are high in NSC, or fed at more than just a few pounds total per day really contribute to the issue.

I have a hot horse and changed his feed to to a maintenance low starch grain for the winter. It took me 4 rides to get him sane again in the spring. I took him off that for 3 weeks and them put him back on rice bran and he looks amazing and rides way more level headed. He isn't trying to paw and jig at the same time anymore. Last year I kept him on rice bran through winter and it only took one to two rides to make him sane again.

I feed mine RG and I also have added via calm and she still has the focus and fire when needed but it's helped keep her level too. Also she's a hard keeper so the RG has really helped fill her out.
