MRI shows deep flexor tear.  How on earth do you get through 6 months of stall rest with a horse that is 7 and lives life to the fullest?  I want to do everything I can to give her a shot at coming back, but I am worried.

Lots of hand grazing, keep a buddy stalled with him, no grain-all forage, drugs if you have too.

^^ what she said. I had one on stall rest for 11 months- any longer and she would've took the barn down. On her final check-up when the vet finally cleared her to transition to a paddock, she pitched a fit in the trailer on the way home and slammed her face against the door frame... so we went BACK to the vet for thirty stitches and more drugs.

Good luck- keep us updated.

Swap out grain for chopped carrots and Apple's.hang a jolly ball from the ceiling and one laying in the stall.keep the same routine. Swap riding for hand grazing or short walks or tied near the arena. Take out of stall just to stand tied next to a companion horse. Thing about a horse they need to move in order to heal. Wishing you the best six months.

Only if necessary, long term sedatives. They can help prevent them from hurting themselves or hindering their progress in healing.

Cut the grain, I actually switched to a Senior formula.  And drugs.  Reserpine is a long lasting sedative.  You can get it in powder form, I gave it every 2-3 days.  They say the shot lasts a week, but it only lasted a few days on mine, so I switched to the powder.

We paneled off part of a dry lot so that the horse could be outside with his buddies. It was a little bigger than a stall, probably 20 x 20. He could walk around but he couldn't lope.

Had a horse that had to sit for 11 months. Just kept his stalled, only fed him grass hay. He had a buddy that was stalled next to him. I used to live in the desert so there was no hand grazing and I hardly walked him, because he was 5 and full of life. But 11 months on stall rest and he came back sound and stronger than before. Never had a problem.
