	needing some advice.. not on bits but on headgear. my gelding is inconsistent with his headgear. I found a bit that works perfect for us but now I'm torn between headgear. with a tie down (wire or rope) he won't run up in the hole. At home I do ride school him in a tie down. normally and lately I've ran him in a wire bonnet, which has been great for him, expect he isn't "free" enough in his shoulder around his turns.( I think) He makes that 'snap back' style instead on that 'stick your leg' smooth fluent style. He still clocks but I don't love that snap back style. tried him in a leather bonnet real loose, it worked well but he was a little to bendy. tonight I ran him with nothing and it was awful, he was all over the place (not his normal self at all) i dont school this horse any differently on any different days I keep it as consistent as I can. I'm starting to think after tonight that the snappy roll back style is just him, I was also thinking keeping the leather bonnet and tightening it a little. please don't tell me, I have 'holes' in the training because he needs a tie down or bonnet. He's a nice horse just sensing him is driving me crazy!

I don't think it's fair to expect a horse to work great in headgear he's not familiar with. I think the over bend in the leather bonnet may be correctable with your riding style if you are asking him to bend too much...that is where I would start.

I think the over bend in the leather bonnet may be correctable with your riding style if you are asking him to bend too much...that is where I would start. I haven't changed it until literally Saturday. Up until then he's been in a wire bonnet. (7 months) saturday I ran him with a leather bonnet and today I ran him with nothing. When I first bought him old owners said the often roared the bonnet and tie down, I don't want to have to that.

Elite Veteran Posts: 747	I've always been told when you put a horse in a bonnet, if they aren't used to it, that you should start out loose and gradually tighten it up to where it needs to be over a few rides. I would try tightening the leather one up and giving him some time to get use to it and see how he feels in it. It may also just be his style. I always try to adapt to let my horse run in the style they want, as long as they are clocking and happy. It's always fun, for me at least, to learn along with my horse.

He's very used to a bonnet, I don't keep it snug snug either. He just kinda started the snap back roll back style. He was more of a stick the leg at one point but I'm starting to think he's coming into himself and really figure himself out. I just thought I'd see what other people had to say. He worked great in a tie down just was SOOO hard to push him into the hole with one rather than a bonnet.
