| I have had a couple both recovered and were completely sound. One went on to be a very nice show horse and the other is running barrels now. The last one I had was pretty dang sick I had to go get him up and hold him to eat but he came around fast. Hope yours gets better. |

He was on Naxcel at the start of the poos, it'd done wonders for sick foals for us in the past. Then he got weak and didn't want to get up to nurse so we would help him. He got cast in his stall-where a healthy foal wouldn't have so that was a set back and he banged his eye up. Got him stronger by nursing the mare, meds and standing him up and the eye is better...then the swollen joints. We'll see what happens. Vet isn't optimistic when 2 or more joints are involved. 1 he says isn't an issue usually, 2 he is guarded and if they have 3 he said it is best to put them down.
I don't know how anyone foals in a barn/stall. We have very clean facilities but it never fails that if we have to foal inside due to weather/early due dates, we have sick babies. We have yet to have a sick one when born in pasture. |

Location: Armuchee, GA, NW section of Ga | Yes, I have. A few years ago I had a colt born it seemed with it. Became so lame by second day I had to actually lift him to nurse. Had my main vet come out to check him, and I didnt like her answer. Basically, he had it, would always be lame, so put him down....I called another vet in town and he came out same day. HE said yep, joint ill BUT...so off to Auburn Large Animal in AUburn Ala at 3 days old. Did I mention this was a very cold January day? But anyway, off to Auburn I went with 3 day old colt and mare. took about 2-3 hour drive. VEt and I had called in advance and they said bring in immediately. So once we got there they evaled him and said they would try, no guarantees. Fine. They started him off on antibiotics, no improvement, but they said they could do surgery, scrape out bad tissue, place catheter in joint and have antiobiotics directly in the joint. Again no guarentees, but I said go ahead. This was his right rear joint. Well they did go ahead, and he & dam ended up staying 30 days. I think after I got the bill they named a new wing after us......but anyway, he recovered and has never taken a lame step thereafter. Money well spent on a beautiful black n white tobi colt. Looks just like his sire who I have on my avitar.

Location: Wonderful Wyoming | no temperature foal appears to have just bumped his hock. Knees are fine. Meds for his eye and we are going home. |
