Here's a scenario would appreciate your thoughts: Is it just me?
Last year attempted to breed my mare-had mare cultured came back clean requested shipped semen-gave mare shot for ovulation-semen arrived didn't look the best but ok. 14 days later no embryo-set mare up again-cultured (clean) for breeding requested semen shipment-semen came looked good, bred mare, sutured, she ovulated like she should have-14 days later nothing-mare infected. Same thing 3rd time, put the mare on regumate.
Nothing wrong with the stud it's my mare said breeding facility & stud owner.
This year same as last-used a different mare had her on go, received semen-looked ok, not the best but ok-14 days later no embryo, mare badly infected-cleaned her up & high powered antibiotics-had her set on go again-called for semen-stud not producing enough semen to ship would I be interested in the other stud they stand-Ok, I like his breeding. That shipment comes and it is dead-they used a different extender that they didn't test on this stud to see how it would ship-They're response, pretty much sorry about your bad luck wanna try again? Told them no thank you, for what I have had to pay for subpar semen (375 each time) I could have bred to something else and gotten my mare bred.
Their response once again-not the studs-my mare.
Am I wrong to think I have been taken down the rosy patch and not kissed? And that it's the studs and not my mares? Sorry for this being so long:( The original stud is a pretty well known stud-love the studs but the breeding facility=a big NOT!

I would ask if the stud is settling mares on the shipments that came from the same collection you were shipped. This happened to us in 2015 and 2016. No answers why the mare wasn't settling, she just wasn't. It took two years (I believe 6 inseminations) and we finally have a foal on the ground out of her. We still don't know why she wouldn't settle......vet is puzzled. We even took her out to the vet collecting the stallion, so that the semen didn't need to be shipped. The foal before this she took on the first try.

Good luck!

I don't believe they are truthful about it-they said everything settled-I might think it was my mare but when the other mare didn't settle from either stud, of course the shipment wasn't any good at all. Now I'm wondering if the breeding facility isn't the problem.

There are so many variables to breeding.  Generally, the receiving vet receives and evaluates the semen.  If the semen is of decent quality, there isn't much more the stallion and stallion owners can do.  I would say it is the mare as well.  The dead semen shipment with the untested extender would tick me off, but other than that it's part of the risk.

When you have tried 2 different mares and both mares ended up empty and infected I think the problem isnt just on your end. Souns like maybe they arent real diligent in cleanliness or something for both mares to start off with clean cultures and end up infected and empty. I would sure like to know who you are dealing with.

If she's getting infected from being inseminated someone isn't using sterile procedures or she needs to be treated 24 hours after breeding with an antibiotic. Are you sure they are saying she's infected or are they saying she has fluid in her uterus? Cause if she's having clearance issues from the inflammatory response to the semen, she needs oxytocin given before and after breeding. There are several things that could be going wrong besides the semen itself.

Using one of the best breeding vets in Texas-they have been very cautious with mare and semen due to the low quality of semen we've received. Both mares very fertile-bred both to different studs also shipped semen & both took 1st shot out of the box. Always keep mares in top shape to give studs every opportunity for nothing to go wrong. Dead semen is on them-after 2 years of telling breeding facility something isn't right with other studs semen now he's not producing enough to ship-I totally believe it's the facility that's not doing their job correctly.

Exactly. I didnt mean on your end with your vet. I meant on their end with their facility/vet.

You need to move on with your mare and live cover.while it's beautiful to AI semen has to be perfect in order to travel to destination and very little window to settle a mare. IF your vet says it don't look that great believe it.
