Extreme Veteran Posts: 378 Location: Saskatchewan	Not a barrel horse, a 9 year old horse of ours bled after she had to get hot after a cow out in the pasture. It was just a little trickle, only saw it after she was basically cooled out and breathing had returned to normal. It didn't take her very long to recover her breath, 5-7 minutes after the little sprint and she was breathing normal, no funny sounds or anything. We've had some pretty wicked wind the last few days and the horses have (for some reason) chose to stand in a sandy corner of the pasture in a dust bowl. Could it maybe just have been due to dust/dryness up in there? I'm really hoping it very well could have just been a freak sort of thing...

Extreme Veteran Posts: 383	only way to figure it out is culture- def give her a rest a few weeks she prob needs on a lung antibiotic to clear blood out- but I have a friend who sold a mare who was known to bleed and the people didn't "see" the blood so they didn't follow advice and now the horse has so much scar tissue in lungs she cant hardly lope- I personally just had my first bleed on a 11 yr old gelding- so I know how ya feel but definitely would get her scoped and on meds

Elite Veteran Posts: 629 Location: Roping pen	We've got a 14 yr old head horse that has done it 2x in the last several years. With research and vet recommendation, they say, make sure you are not running them on a full belly. If we dry lot him for an a few hours before we work him, no problems. What happened, in his case, is that the full belly put pressure on the diaphragm and blood vessels break when the diaphragm tries to expand. Not a big deal and has been easily deterred by getting rid of some fullness before exercise.

The Bling Princess Posts: 3411 Location: North Dakota	I had a horse that bled after a dusty weekend of barrel racing. It was bright red, thin trickle line, and only came from one nostril. Had him scoped (vet had me work him...hard and then scope him)and it ended up being a burst capillary in his sinus cavity. He's been fine ever since.
